Heavy Water Could Extend Lifespan in Humans by Preventing Free Radical Damage

Russian biochemist Mikhail Shchepinov may be on to something big. He's been developing heavy water technology and testing it on various animals to see how the substance might reduce free radical damage and extend lifespan.

Although results are preliminary, one test with fruit flies showed an increased lifespan of 30 percent.

Heavy water is just like H2O except that the hydrogen atoms are replaced with deuterium, making D2O. Because heavy isotopes have stronger chemical bonds, they resist oxidation far better than the lighter hydrogen molecules. As a result, they act sort of like "oxidation body armor" for cells.

And because aging is caused in part by the free radical breakdown of cellular function, heavy water should extend lifespan when consumed by humans or animals. That's the theory, at least, and Shchepinov has formed a company called Retrotope (www.Retrotope.com) to find out if his theories are correct.

Of course, aging involves a lot more than just free radical damage. A lot of recent research on anti-aging focuses on telomeres and preventing their fragmentation or shortening. One company even claims that an extract from the Chinese herb astragalus prevents the shortening of telomeres, extending lifespan.

There are a lot of promising anti-aging technologies on the horizon, but the reality of the situation is that consumers could extend their lifespan right now by 20 - 30 percent by simply avoiding processed meat, getting regular exercise, eating a largely plant-based diet and avoiding exposure to toxic chemicals in foods, drugs, personal care products and home environments.
