AI bubble’s first major leak: Why the $10T data center boom is starting to crack
10/22/2026 // Ramon Tomey // Views

  • Over $10 trillion in projected AI infrastructure spending from 2025 to 2032 is showing serious fractures, with at least 47 large data center projects delayed, withdrawn or blocked in 2026 alone.
  • Rising interest rates, souring bond markets, local opposition and construction delays have triggered a sell-off, sending CoreWeave's stock down nearly 25% and pushing some of its bonds into distressed territory.
  • Analysts estimate only about 35% of planned U.S. data center pipeline is credible, while over 1,000 communities have introduced moratoriums or restrictions on AI infrastructure this year.
  • CoreWeave, SB Energy, TeraWulf, Cipher and Nscale face significant financial strains including renegotiated leases, delayed deliveries, cost overruns and doubts about their ability to finance massive Nvidia hardware and data center commitments.
  • The industry's shift from expansion to efficiency signals a more sustainable but competitive landscape. However, over-investment in AI infrastructure concentrates power among oligarchs and Big Tech while risking a broader reckoning as speculative fever meets reality.

The great American artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure boom, a frenzy of spending that has exceeded $10 trillion in projected investment from 2025 to 2032, is showing its first serious fractures.

According to data shared by regulatory intelligence company RegLayer, at least 47 large data center projects have been delayed, withdrawn or blocked in 2026 alone. This week, investors began repricing risks across the sector, sending cloud computing firm CoreWeave's stock down nearly 25% and pushing some of its bonds into distressed territory.

A combination of rising interest rates, souring bond markets, local opposition and construction delays threaten the ambitious build-out that has underpinned the AI economy. The reckoning arrives more than three years into the AI boom, a period some industry participants have described as the "Wild West," when money flooded into brand-new companies and due diligence for new projects was expedited in the race to secure computing power.

The data center gold rush, once seen as a surefire path to dominance in the AI industry, now faces a pivotal moment. Analysts at Bernstein this month estimated only about 35% of the planned U.S. data center pipeline was credible, and more than 1,000 communities across the country have tried to introduce moratoriums or other restrictions on AI infrastructure this year, according to Financial Times research. Higher borrowing costs and rising inflation have added to mounting questions about whether the revenues of leading labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI will be sufficient to cover costs.

The financial strains are becoming visible across the sector. CoreWeave, a small cryptocurrency miner just four years ago, has been at the center of a sell-off as investors fret over its ability to keep financing the billions it will spend on Nvidia hardware and data center leases. One of its unsecured bonds sank into distressed territory this week, while bonds funding data centers leased to CoreWeave also slid – with a $1.1 billion bond for a Virginia site losing about 5% of its value in the three weeks since it priced.

SB Energy, majority owned by Masayoshi Son's SoftBank and backed by OpenAI and Nvidia, has not completed a single data center. Yet it faces $174 billion in capital needs to satisfy contracts worth $430 billion in future revenue, largely from OpenAI. The group has delayed plans for a public listing at a $50 billion valuation.

The staggering gap between AI hype and hardware

Former cryptocurrency miners TeraWulf and Cipher have renegotiated leases and extended delivery schedules on projects for Anthropic, partly because of design changes from the AI lab and its partner Fluidstack. When Cipher amended its lease with Fluidstack at a Texas site last month, it secured more time to deliver but agreed to absorb the first $359 million of cost overruns, changes that required roughly $750 million of additional equity partly funded by an $850 million convertible bond.

Meanwhile, Anthropic can walk away from its $45 billion deal with Nscale, a London-headquartered neocloud launched in 2024, if the group does not hit financing or delivery timelines for a major project in West Virginia. Nscale had just 25,000 advanced AI chips online as of August, compared with the nearly 500,000 it plans to operate, highlighting the enormous gap between ambition and reality.

The industry’s transition from expansion to efficiency could redefine the future of AI infrastructure, signaling a more sustainable but also more competitive landscape. The central challenge for America's AI boom is turning huge investment plans into working infrastructure, and that task has become significantly more difficult. BrightU.AI's Enoch engine points out that over-investing in AI infrastructure concentrates unprecedented power in the hands of globalist oligarchs and Big Tech, who use these soulless systems to accelerate corporate consolidation, rig markets and enforce total surveillance and control over the population.

While Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang remained upbeat, telling a London crowd on Oct. 14 that Nvidia had helped build up Nscale from zero in a year’s time, the market's jitters persist. The AI bubble may continue expanding for some time, but eventually, reality will set in – and those who understand the difference between genuine technological value and speculative fever will be best positioned to navigate what comes next.
