Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is native to Southeast Asia. This golden-orange rhizome is dried and ground into a powdered spice with many culinary, medicinal, and cosmetic uses. Called khamin in Thai, turmeric is one of the key ingredients utilized in traditional skin care. When the fresh rhizome is crushed, an oil is produced that lends an effective natural moisturizer with antiseptic qualities. To minimize dark circles under eyes, whisk together 1 tablespoon whole milk, 1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder, and 1 teaspoon smooth almond butter. Apply under eyes and let it set for 10 minutes. Gently remove with cotton ball soaked in milk.

For a nourishing moisturizing mask, combine 4 macadamia nuts, 1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder, 2 drops lemon juice, and 3 tablespoons milk in a coffee grinder. Process until smooth. Apply to face and let it set for 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

A pinch of turmeric powder blended with sesame oil keeps gums healthy. Massage the mixture into gums for 5-10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

A simple recipe for illuminating a dull complexion is found in Natural Beauty Secrets from India:

Combine 1 teaspoon gram flour with 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder. Add a 1/2 teaspoon each of olive oil and milk plus 4-5 drops of lemon juice. Apply to skin and leave it on for 25-30 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

Since turmeric's color can stain, keep away from hairline. To remove any coloring from skin, simply rub a milk soaked cotton ball on affected area.
