Kellogg's Keebler Peanut Butter Crackers Recalled in Salmonella Scare

Got a pantry full of Keebler Peanut Butter Crackers? Today you finally have another good reason to throw them out: The Kellogg company has issued a precautionary recall, following the announcement by Peanut Corp. of America that its peanut butter paste was found to be contaminated with salmonella. (Kellogg, like many companies, sources its peanut butter paste from Peanut Corp. of America.)

The crackers affected by the recall are: Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers.

According to reports from the Associated Press and Reuters, the peanut butter salmonella outbreak has sickened 430 people in 43 states and has likely killed five adults so far.

The Kellogg recall is likely overly precautionary, in my opinion, since crackers made with the peanut butter paste are toasted, killing any potential salmonella. Chances are that Keebler Peanut Butter crackers pose no health risk whatsoever from salmonella. Of course, there are other nutritional reasons to throw them out, but the potential for salmonella poisoning probably doesn't even make the top ten.

It's a shame that peanut butter got caught up in this salmonella scare, because it's one of the few truly healthy foods eaten by mainstream consumers. Peanut oil is a natural anti-inflammatory food, and peanut butter is rich with healing nutrients. Most peanut butter sold in America, of course, contains trans fatty acids, and in my view, those partially-hydrogenated oils in peanut butter create a far greater risk to the health of Americans than an isolated salmonella outbreak.
