Melamine Found in Baby Formula Products Sold in the United StatesBy Mike Adams, November 26, 2008 | Key concepts: Melamine, Infant formula and FDA After sickening tens of thousands of children in China, the industrial chemical melamine has now been detected in smaller amounts in U.S. infant formula products.After discovering melamine levels of 140ppb (parts per billion) in U.S. infant formula products, the FDA immediately took to the defense of the industry, claiming the levels were too low to be called "contaminants" and refusing to release the names of the products found to contain melamine. Judy must be a demigod of some sort to have completed a complex risk analysis so quickly that she could have declared the melamine contamination to present "absolutely no risk." That's impressive scientific research, I must say! If there's no risk, then why won't the FDA release the brand name of the products found to contain melamine? The truth is that there has never been any scientific determination of a "safe" level of melamine in infant formula products. And it was only a couple of months ago that the FDA assured U.S. consumers there was NO melamine in U.S. baby formula products, remember? Funny how their story changes every couple of months, and despite finding the chemical in the products, it has decided to protect the identity of those manufacturers rather than inform the public about the details of its findings. Here's something else you need to know about this issue: The FDA reveals that these melamine-contaminated infant formula products were NOT made in China! And that means even U.S.-made formula products can no longer be assumed to be free of melamine. So the whole idea of avoiding milk protein from China while trusting it in the U.S. is no longer valid. I have a theory about all this that the FDA won't dare tell anybody: The melamine contamination of U.S.-made infant formula is caused by using milk from cows whose feed is contaminated with melamine. If the feed comes from China (or another untrustworthy source), it may be adulterated with melamine, and that chemical can pass right through the cow, into their milk. This milk then becomes the basis of U.S.-made infant formula products. But of course there's no problem, if you believe the FDA. And there's no such thing as mad cow disease, either, and hot dogs are perfectly safe for children to eat (don't mind the sodium nitrite that causes cancer). Yep, there's hardly a chemical in the food supply that the FDA hasn't said, at one time or another, is perfectly safe for people to consume in virtually unlimited quantities. That's what the FDA says about bisphenol A, after all, and that notorious plastics chemical is in the process of being banned in most advanced nations around the world. But not here in the good 'ol USA, where chemicals in the food are as American as baseball and (contaminated) apple pie. Click to read: |
