Busted! NPR Radio Doc Caught with Undisclosed Financial Ties to Big Pharma

Is it even surprising anymore? NPR radio show host Dr. Federick Goodwin has been busted by the office of Sen. Charles Grassley who continues to uncover undisclosed financial ties between drug companies and psychiatric doctors.

On the very day that Dr. Goodwin hosted a national NPR radio program that claimed children with bipolar disorder who don't get medicated could suffer brain damage (which is complete B.S., by the way), he received a $2,500 payment from GlaxoSmithKline.

Throughout 2005, Dr. Goodwin received over $329,000 from Glaxo.

I always knew NPR radio hosts were following a pro-Pharma agenda, but I never knew they were receiving such huge sums of money directly from drug companies. Dr. Goodwin's total take from Big Pharma was $1.3 million.

This one deserves some complaints, folks. Contact NPR here: http://www.npr.org/contact/

And tell them to end their corruption and apparent bribery by Big Pharma.

It's also worth contact Sen. Charles Grassley's office and thanking him for doing such a great job! Call 'em with thanks: http://grassley.senate.gov/contact.cfm

UPDATE: Within minutes after posting this story, we were contacted by NPR's top public relations staffer who went to great lengths to distance NPR from the apparent bribery or corruption demonstrated by Dr. Goodwin. NPR's statement is as follows:

“The Infinite Mind” is not an NPR program. NPR does not produce “The Infinite Mind,” nor does NPR distribute the program or market it to our member stations. No one associated with “The Infinite Mind” team is an NPR employee.

“The Infinite Mind” has aired on one of two channels that NPR programs on Sirius Satellite Radio. All programs on NPR’s Sirius channels are expected to adhere to the same code of ethics and practices that apply to programs produced and distributed by NPR. It appears that “The Infinite Mind” was in direct violation of that code, and is being removed from the channel.

Well there you have it, folks: "The Infinite Mind" is being dropped from NPR!

One down, a dozen more to go. The number of nutritionally-illiterate, pro-pharma hosts on NPR is nothing short of staggering. The good news is that as of today, that number has been reduced by one.
