Participants who engaged in just five minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity—brisk walking, light jogging, or water aerobics—showed improved processing speed, executive function and working memory compared to less active peers. The most dramatic improvements occurred when previously sedentary individuals increased their daily activity from one minute to six minutes.
The IGNITE trial tracked participants' sleep, physical activity and sedentary behavior over 24 hours, correlating those patterns with cognitive performance. The fMRI study, published in peer-reviewed journals, scanned brains before and at 15 and 45 minutes after 30-minute walking or sitting sessions.
