Bright flashes were spotted over the weekend near Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert, about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles, according to a report published Aug. 17, 2026, in the Daily Mail. One X user commented: "This is a test." Another wrote: "It looks like a phenomenon coming from underground military authorities. Must investigate ASAP."

The episode follows other publicly reported sightings near military grounds in the region. A family of four observed and photographed an unidentified object described as dumbbell- or H-shaped near Joshua Tree National Park, a location close to military bases, according to a report published in May 2026 [2]. Peer-reviewed research published in Scientific Reports has also documented statistical correlations between mysterious objects photographed in the 1950s and Cold War-era nuclear weapons test sites [3].

Edwards Air Force Base's Role and History

Edwards Air Force Base is described in the report as a premier center for flight research and aircraft testing.
