(NaturalNews) According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, at least 85% of menstruating women have at least one PMS (premenstrual syndrome) symptom in conjunction with their cycle. But Jessica, who adopted a raw food lifestyle, is not one of these women.

Jessica, who also shares her story and healthy tips online via her "40 and Fit on Fruit" sites, started the 80/10/10 diet in 2011. With that diet, 10% of calories are derived from protein, 10% from fat and 80% from carbohydrates.

She attributes this lifestyle to the elimination of her unbearable symptoms.

Disruptive PMS symptoms: Before the raw food diet

Prior to starting a raw food diet, Jessica experienced a debilitating cycle of emotions before the start of her period, including continually feeling angry for no reason and feeling exhausted. She could not control these unsettling emotions which ultimately ended up seeping into her personal and professional life. At work, where she is a Project Manager, she started postponing important meetings, saying she felt like a tired and "shy little girl" with low self-esteem.

On the physical front, Jessica's periods lasted over a week and a half. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes a normal period as one that can last from two to seven days but notes that every woman is different, so variations within those parameters can occur. Still, Jessica describes her immune system as a "catastrophe," adding that she was also very underweight.

Relief from PMS symptoms: After the raw food diet

Once Jessica began eating raw foods (she "monomeals" on a fruit-based diet) normalcy was restored. She is free of the persistent exhaustion that plagued her and no longer feels angry for no reason. She interacts with her family and now attends meetings brimming with confidence and energy. Furthermore, the duration of her period is now just four days.

Jessica often enjoys juice or watermelon for breakfast and likes to add kale to her banana smoothies.

"If you want to make a change," she says, "just change what you put in your mouth."
