(NaturalNews) Old media icon The Washington Post has once again been caught lying to its readers, this time about an "epidemic" of campus rape that's not quite what the paper claims it to be. A recent series of front-page news items claiming that one in five female college students is "sexually assaulted" has been exposed as a hoax, adding to the paper's already tarnished reputation for aligning itself with Monsanto and pro-GMO interests.

The Weekly Standard first broke the news on the Post's abuse of its own journalistic integrity, revealing that the paper skewed a survey it conducted to make it seem like more college students are raped by other college students than is actually the case. By asking college students vague questions about their various sexual escapades, the Post was able to conjure up a wildly overblown rate of campus rape cases in order to push its own agenda.

In this case, it appears as though the Post was just looking for a few controversial stories to sell, headlining the lie that 20% of college women today end up getting raped at some point throughout their higher educational experience. And in the process, the Post has further perpetuated a systemic bias against those accused of such rape, who are often denied due process and assumed to be guilty until proven innocent, rather than the other way around.

The New York Times is also guilty of this, having published numerous pieces over the years accusing possibly innocent students of rape while simultaneously censoring evidence suggesting their innocence. This dirty tactic might sell more papers, but it's also tarnishing the way that many colleges handle alleged rape cases, presuming honesty of the accusers and guilt of the accused.

"The articles and the poll purport to confirm claims by the [Obama] administration, its congressional supporters, most of the media, and campus activists that around 20 percent of female college students are sexually assaulted while at school," explains The Weekly Standard.

"But like many other advocacy polls on sexual assault, the Post-Kaiser poll misleads readers—most of whom surely will assume that 'sexual assault' means criminal sexual assault—by using that criminally charged phrase for shock value in the articles while deliberately avoiding it in the survey questions."

Mainstream media lies are eroding constitutional rights; innocent until proven guilty no longer the norm

This isn't all that surprising coming from the same news rag that we recently reported has been on a "greenwashing" binge in support of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and biotechnology. Following Chipotle's recent announcement that the chain has officially scrapped GMOs from its menu offerings, the Post immediately began publishing hit pieces aimed at derailing the growing movement away from patented, chemical-drenched garbage food.

The entire editorial board of the Post, in fact, appears to have been completely infiltrated with pro-Monsanto shills, who are now also running falsified stories about campus rape. This is apparently what happens when the dinosaur media comes to the realization that it's reached the point of irrelevancy, hastening its own demise by publishing ridiculous lies better fit for a tabloid paper or satire site.

The Post's reprehensible lies about campus rape statistics could easily be ignored if they weren't having the effect of changing how students and administrators alike view the legal procedure for dealing with cases of alleged sexual assault. The legal presumption of innocence until being proven guilty is gradually being eroded, with many college students now of the persuasion that punishing possibly innocent individuals is better than letting possibly guilty individuals off the hook.

"Alarmism in coverage such as the Post's already is having a deeply disturbing impact on attitudes toward civil liberties," contends The Weekly Standard about how mainstream media lies are furthering the demise of our rights as American citizens. "As often occurs in periods of hysteria, these future citizens are accepting the fundamentally illiberal message that convicting the innocent is a price to pay to achieve the greater good."
