(NaturalNews) Holistic physician Dr. David Brownstein has a message for the fanatical vaccine pushers: Relax.

In a recent blog post, Brownstein used the current measles outbreak that reportedly began at Disney Land in California to talk about the "hysteria" associated with it.

"I have seen the articles stating that parents who choose not to vaccinate should be prosecuted. Parents who choose not to vaccinate have been accused of child abuse," he wrote.

"I say everyone needs to chill out--easy for me to write that in the midst of a foot of snow falling."

Brownstein notes that, while measles is highly infectious, it is nonetheless very common throughout the world. He says some estimates claim there are 20 million cases of measles around the world every year.

And while measles can sometimes lead to severe problems like encephalitis and even death, "serious complications" from the disease "are rare in the developed world."

"I am not downplaying serious problems related to the measles virus," Brownstein wrote. "However, serious problems can develop from anything--a common upper respiratory illness can develop into pneumonia. People can die from pneumonia. Should parents who send their children to school with an upper respiratory infection--a cold--be accused of child abuse? Should they be prosecuted? Of course not."

Death rates were falling way before vaccines

He notes that measles can really cause severe complications in people with severe vitamin A deficiencies, for instance, so one of the best ways to prevent serious complications from the disease is to supplement diets with vitamin A.

Dr. Brownstein wrote that the measles vaccine was first introduced in 1963, and given the propaganda surrounding it, people might think that it alone is responsible for the "rapid decline in mortality" from the disease. But according to a graph he posted with his blog entry, the decline in measles mortality began at about the turn of the 20th century.

He said the "Powers-That-Be" claim that vaccines have dramatically lowered the death rate of many common childhood diseases like measles and whooping cough. But as the chart indicates, mortality rates of those diseases were falling before mass vaccinations began.

"I am not saying that all vaccines don't work. I know some of them do," Dr. Brownstein wrote. "The chicken pox vaccine has clearly lowered the incidence of chicken pox. However, is that a good thing? I am not sure as shingles cases have skyrocketed since the mass vaccination of chicken pox was started. And, perhaps a child's immune system needs to be stimulated with these childhood infections to become strong."

On a recent trip to Barbados (a "beautiful island with wonderful people"), Brownstein said a subscriber to his Natural Way to Health newsletter came up to him to ask a question after recognizing him from his picture in the newsletter.

"Why are so many kids having all these allergies? We never saw peanut, milk and gluten allergies when we were kids--where is it all coming from?" she asked.

Parents should choose

"I said to her that there are multiple reasons for this but the main reasons are that the young generation's immune system is becoming weaker and weaker," Brownstein wrote. "I feel that today's children, as compared to previous generations, are suffering from more chronic illnesses because they are exposed to more toxins and they are receiving too many vaccines at too young of an age. The vaccines contain toxic elements such as mercury, aluminum and formaldehyde. It is ludicrous to inject these toxic agents into our youth and expect good outcomes."

In sum, Dr. Brownstein believes that the vaccine rhetoric needs to be toned down, and that parents ought to have the final say in whether or not they want to vaccinate their own children.
