The slope of fossil fuel use simply has not bent. That pattern is confirmed in the industry's own bookkeeping. The Energy Institute's Statistical Review of World Energy for 2025, drawing on 2024 figures, found that for the first time since 2006, every major category of energy, renewables included, reached record consumption levels in the same year. Fossil fuels still supply roughly the overwhelming bulk of global primary energy - a share that has hardly moved in decades even as solar and wind installations multiplied. Total worldwide energy demand itself hit an all-time high. Renewables were not substituted for anything. They were simply piled on top of a system that kept growing regardless.
This addition, not substitution, dynamic carries a heavy and often overlooked cost. Energy historian Daniel Yergin documented in his Pulitzer-winning book "The New Map" that a single onshore wind turbine demands roughly fifteen hundred tons of iron, twenty-five hundred tons of concrete and forty-five tons of plastic, while a single electric vehicle battery requires around half a million pounds of raw material to be mined and processed. That means more mountains scraped open, more forests cleared for mining access and more diesel-burning machinery working around the clock, all in service of a green technology sold to the public as inherently gentler on the planet.
Perhaps the most telling sign that the transition narrative has collapsed is who is now saying so out loud. Yergin, together with Lazard chief Peter Orszag and energy strategist Atul Arya, wrote in Foreign Affairs earlier this year that the shift toward renewables has proven far more difficult and uneven than promised, and that the share of hydrocarbons in the global primary energy mix has hardly budged across more than three decades. These are establishment voices who once championed the very transition they are now quietly walking back.
Even James Hansen, the NASA scientist widely credited with launching the modern climate alarm movement, has broken ranks. He has called the notion that batteries and renewables alone could supply all needed energy fantastical, comparing the belief that the world could rapidly abandon fossil fuels to childhood tales of the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has likewise conceded that oil and gas will remain part of the fuel mix for a long time to come. And at a G20 meeting held this week in Houston, the undisputed energy capital of the world, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum put it most bluntly of all, telling attendees that what had been marketed as an energy transition was, in practice, energy subtraction.
None of this should be read as a defeat. A world enriched with more carbon dioxide is a greener world, one in which plant life flourishes and crop yields benefit, a far cry from the mountains of mined minerals and industrialized landscapes that wind and solar buildout demand. As developing nations across the Global South continue to industrialize and their appetite for reliable power grows, the honest path forward is not chasing a transition that never materialized. It is recognizing that re-carbonizing, rather than decarbonizing, the world's energy grid may be exactly what human flourishing requires in the years ahead.
