The “gaffe machine” strikes again: Biden forgets what century it is
04/16/2024 // Belle Carter // Views

In a recent joint press conference in the White House Rose Garden alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, President Joe Biden committed yet another major blunder that instantly went viral among critics who say he's too old for another four-year term.

Peter Alexander of NBC News asked Biden to address the issue of abortion in Arizona, where the state Supreme Court ruled last week that an 1864 law banning abortion from the moment of conception remains in effect, with only a narrow exception to save the life of a mother. Biden responded by saying: "Elect me. I'm in the 20, 20th century." He eventually corrected himself, saying"21st century, not back then. They weren't even a state."

Biden is determined to secure a second term in the White House, insisting that he can again beat former President Donald Trump. However, he has been frequently misspeaking and making blunders in public and has referred to himself as a "gaffe machine." Last week, he also struggled to get his name right during a speech at the White House to mark Greek Independence Day.

Also, the POTUS recently appeared to indicate that he wanted people to remember his presidential legacy as having something to do with ending the Vietnam War. In a report released earlier this year explaining his decision not to pursue charges against Biden for his mishandling classified information, special counsel Robert Hur described the 81-year-old as a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

These repeated gaffes and memory lapses have led the public to believe that the octogenarian president is suffering from significant cognitive decline. In fact, a recent poll revealed that only 38 percent of probable voters for the 2024 presidential election believe he will see through another term.

Meanwhile, 77-year-old Trump argued he retains his cognitive abilities better than his successor, a statement that surveys recently indicate most Americans agree with. In a Newsmax interview back in February, Trump referred to Biden as "a guy who can't even put two sentences together. Trump has warned that Biden's propensity for gaffes could lead to nuclear war and other poor government decisions. (Related: Time to go! The overwhelming majority of Americans deem Biden TOO OLD for a second term, poll finds.)

Other lapses Biden has committed recently were mistaking Egypt for Mexico and confusing world leaders with their long-dead predecessors. He addressed French president Emmanuel Macron as Francois Mitterand, who died in 1996, during a rally address to supporters in Las Vegas, Nevada, while recounting a G7 meeting in Cornwall in June 2021. Speaking subsequently in New York a few days later, he claimed to have discussed the Capitol riot with former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who passed away in 2017, four years before it took place. He was thinking of Angela Merkel.

Also that same month, he appeared unable to recall the name of the terror group being fought by Israel in Gaza. He also stumbled awkwardly on the stairs of Air Force One in July 2023 and was caught sleeping on the job at the COP26 climate change conference in Scotland in November 2021.

Report reveals Biden has "significant limitations in his memory"

When a bombshell report revealed that Biden has "significant limitations in his memory," one of his allies branded it as "the worst day of his presidency."

The lawyers who interviewed Biden as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents reported that Biden could not even remember the years when he was vice president or when his son died of brain cancer.

"I think he needs to show us this is a demonstrably false characterization of him and that he has what it takes to win and govern," the ally told NBC News. Another Democratic operative said the report was "beyond devastating" and "confirms every doubt and concern" that voters have about the POTUS. "If the only reason they didn't charge him is because he's too old to be charged, then how can he be President of the United States?" they added.
