Trump LEADS among Hispanic and under-35 voters in new poll
01/09/2024 // Ava Grace // Views

Former President Donald Trump appears to have begun 2024 on a high note, leading among Hispanic voters and those under the age of 35. Results of the poll conducted by USA Today and Suffolk University were released on Jan. 1.

The poll surveyed 1,000 likely U.S. voters between Dec. 26 and Dec. 29, 2023. According to its results, Trump leads among voters under the age of 35 – with 37 percent of the cohort supporting the former president compared to the 33 percent supporting incumbent President Joe Biden.

It found that 39 percent of Hispanic respondents back Trump, compared to only 34 percent for Biden. Four years earlier in 2020, Biden drew in 65 percent of Hispanics – more than double the 32 percent of votes Trump received from the group. It also found that the former president has the support of 12 percent of Black voters, mirroring the percentage of votes he garnered during the 2020 election.

Moreover, the poll found that Trump (39 percent) leads Biden (37 percent) among American voters overall by two points. Seventeen percent of the poll's respondents support a third party option, according to the Post Millennial. Upon further scrutiny, 20 percent of Hispanic and Black voters and 21 percent of younger voters said they will support someone other than Trump or Biden.

Trump's lead (37 percent) over Biden (34 percent) expands to three points when third-party candidates are included in the equation. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. gained the most support among the potential third-party candidates at 10 percent. (Related: Trump gains 9-POINT LEAD over Biden in Pennsylvania poll.)

"Although Trump hasn't grown support among Black voters, he has closed the deficit because third-party voters come off of Biden's support among Blacks," said David Paleologos, director of Suffolk's Political Research Center. "A young voter or a person of color voting 'third party' is a vote away from Biden, and a vote away from Biden is a vote for Trump."

Biden's stance on major issues disliked by many young Americans

According to The Hill, young progressives have been disappointed over Biden's refusal to take further action on priorities such as climate change and voting rights. Student loan repayments resumed after his efforts to forgive a significant amount of debt were blocked by the Supreme Court. His backing of Israel in its war with Hamas is also disliked by many younger Americans, who are typically more sympathetic to Palestinians affected in the conflict.

The poll also made voters describe their level of enthusiasm for their candidate on a scale of one to 10. Forty-four percent of Trump supporters described their enthusiasm as a 10 out of 10, while only 18 percent of Biden supporters described their enthusiasm for their candidate in the same way.

Several respondents also shared to USA Today their thoughts about Trump. Seventy-eight-year-old Republican Joyce Masumoto from California's Orange County said the former president "has integrity." She continued: "Biden and the Democrats [are] always bringing up Trump; he's not even doing anything and they're blaming things on him."

Republican-leaning independent voter James Traylor, 45, said he is considering a vote for Kennedy. Despite this, the resident of Forney, Texas said he would vote for Trump over Biden.

"I voted for him the first time around [in 2016] and I was happy with his presidency," said Traylor, a member of the Forney City Council. "[I] voted for him a second time [in 2020]."
