These fruits found to raise blood platelet levels in patients with dengue fever
01/19/2019 // Zoey Sky // Views

When a person has dengue fever, they can experience symptoms like thrombocytopenia, or low platelet levels. This condition can range from mild to severe, depending on its underlying cause. To raise your platelet levels, you can consume healing fruits like kiwi or papaya.

Thrombocytopenia is a common symptom of dengue, and it is characterized by the drastic decrease of platelets in the blood. If a patient experiences low platelet levels because of dengue virus, they may feel dizzy and weak. A dengue patient with thrombocytopenia may also feel pain in their joints.

You can naturally increase the platelet levels of a person with dengue fever by feeding them the healing fruits listed below.

  1. Guava (Psidium guajava) – Guava fruit is full of vitamin C that can increase immunity and boost your platelet levels, especially if you are suffering from dengue fever.
  2. Kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa) – Kiwi fruit has vitamins C, E, and K. The fruit also contains folate and potassium, and all these nutrients can benefit your immune system. Eating kiwi fruit can help boost your platelet levels and replenish your electrolytes.
  3. Papaya (Carica papaya) – Papaya has potent nutrients such as chymopapain, folate, papain, and potassium. The fruit also contains vitamin C and fiber that can boost your metabolic system and increase low platelet levels. If you have dengue, consume at least two to three pieces of papaya daily to improve your immune system. (Related: Scientists discover the potential use of papaya leaf juice for treating dengue.)

  5. Pomegranate (Punica granatum) – Pomegranates contain polyphenolic flavonoids that can help fight microbes. It also has vitamin C and antioxidants that can strengthen the immune system so it can fight against viruses. Consume pomegranates to naturally raise your platelet levels.

These four fruits can be processed into juice drinks if the patient is too weak to consume them as is. Juicing the fruits also makes it easier to absorb their nutritional content.

What is thrombocytopenia?

Blood is made up of different types of cells that float in a liquid called plasma. The three types of blood cells include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (or thrombocytes).

When skin is injured or broken, platelets clump together and form clots to stop the bleeding. However, if you don’t have enough platelets in your blood, your body is unable to form clots.

If you have a low platelet count, you are suffering from a condition called thrombocytopenia. Some people with the condition experience severe bleeding, and they can die if they don't receive medical treatment immediately.

However, other individuals with thrombocytopenia may not experience any symptoms.

In some cases, a low platelet count is caused by a medical condition like leukemia or certain medications. Treatment will often address the condition causing the thrombocytopenia.

The common symptoms of a low platelet count include:

  • Bleeding from the rectum
  • Bleeding from wounds that last for a prolonged period or doesn’t stop on its own
  • Bleeding gums
  • Blood in your stool
  • Blood in your urine
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Nosebleeds
  • A rash with small red or purple dots (petechiae)
  • Red, purple, or brown bruises (purpura)

Severe cases of thrombocytopenia may involve internal bleeding that includes symptoms such as:

  • Blood in the stool
  • Blood in the urine
  • Bloody or very dark vomit

Consult a healthcare professional immediately if you experience any signs of internal bleeding.

In very rare cases, thrombocytopenia may cause bleeding in the brain. If you have a low platelet count and experience headaches or any neurological problems, seek medical attention right away.
