Honey and lemon: A match made in heaven
08/05/2016 // Vicki Batts // Views

Honey and lemon are two of nature's most potent natural remedies. They are even more beneficial when used together, each enhancing and increasing the other's beneficial and supportive properties. They act in unison to support good health in a variety of ways. Honey and lemon can be used together to treat many common ailments.

For example, honey and lemon are great for treating many types of respiratory irritations or infections. Just one tablespoon of honey with two teaspoons of fresh lemon juice mixed with a steaming cup of hot water makes for a powerful expectorant and decongestant. Consuming this concoction two or three times a day when you are sick will help to drive the phlegm out of your lungs and sinuses. Honey is antimicrobial and helps to melt away pain and inflammation. This drink can even be consumed to help soothe some of the symptoms associated with asthma.

Honey and lemon is also a popular combination used to treat cold and flu-like symptoms. One excellent all-natural home remedy includes the addition of ginger, for extra oomph. What you want to do is take a kettle filled with clean, filtered water and add two slices of ginger to it before bringing it to a boil. After boiling, add about three tablespoons of honey and three tablespoons of fresh lemon juice to it. Drink the tea three or four times a day to help get rid of any cold or flu symptoms. Vitamin C from the lemon helps to support a healthy immune system, while the antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of honey and ginger help to reduce symptoms and kill off bacteria.

In 2014, Mirror reported that the NHS encouraged UK citizens to try the honey and lemon home remedy as an alternative to expensive cough syrups. They also reported that doctors and specialists have noted that the scientific evidence supporting the benefits of cough syrup use is actually quite weak, and there is no concrete evidence that it actually works.

In addition to fighting colds and other respiratory ailments, honey and lemon can also help to heal gastrointestinal illnesses and upsets. Honey and lemon water is said to help relieve constipation and also acts as a digestive tonic. It can help to soothe an upset stomach and indigestion. Honey and lemon can also help boost your immune system and detoxify your body. Lemon is a natural diuretic with antioxidant compounds, while honey is a great antimicrobial agent that also has its own antioxidant benefits. Combined, this makes for a great combination to help flush toxins from your system.
