(NaturalNews) Almost every single lawmaker in Congress is bought off by some powerful interest. Most bureaucrats working for government protection agencies (FDA, CDC, and EPA) are only serving their masters: the corporations. Big money is a very convincing force and it dictates many of the policies in the U.S. The government has become a tool of force, giving industries more power over the people. As this corrupt system overtakes, the American public is easily misled by propaganda, forced into the unknowing, with their lives put in danger.

For example, US Representative Mike Pompeo (R-Kansas) has introduced legislation to block any federal or state action requiring companies to label foods made with genetically engineered ingredients. This legislation, known as the DARK Act (Deny Americans the Right to Know) would block transparency, allowing companies to disguise genetically engineered ingredients in their products.

U.S. government is being used to prohibit the public from knowing what's in their food

Most of the American people want to know what they are eating, and some states, including Maine and Connecticut, have drafted bills that would require food companies to label genetically modified ingredients. The DARK Act would stop this new wave of transparency, ultimately leaving the public in the dark. No one would know if they were eating foods sprayed with chemical pesticides or crops that were engineered to create their own synthetic pesticide.

"More than 90 percent of Americans support labeling of GE foods," said Scott Faber, senior vice-president of government affairs for the Environmental Working Group. "It's clear the public wants to know what's in their food, but if Rep. Pompeo has his way, no one will have that right."

Since 1989, Pompeo has received nearly $170,000 from agribusiness and $81,000 from the food and beverage industry. It's easy to see how this money influences the type of legislation he introduces.

As industry and government work hand in hand, people are left wondering what they are eating. Not all food is grown in the same way. People are finding out through their own personal experiences that eliminating chemicals is the way to have a healthy, quality life. If companies are allowed to blind the public with dishonest labels, people's lives are put in danger. Consumers have no choice but to be the guinea pigs for chemicals and altered crop genetics created by biotech companies.

USDA Organic label and non-GMO Project Verified fall short

The USDA has provided its own organic label to help consumers, but how can the people trust the government's oversight as the standards are watered down time and time again?

The non-GMO Project Verified label helps consumers choose food products with ingredients that have not been changed at the genetic level, but non-GMO foods could still be contaminated by various pesticides that get in people's urine, blood and breast milk.

Both the USDA organic label and the non-GMO Project Verified have grown in popularity, but both efforts fall short of consumers' growing expectations for clean food.

New organic, non-GMO label takes off in California

A new, independent label has been launched in California to certify products as both organic and non-GMO. The non-profit label takes away the confusion and raises the standards. Products with this label are declared "Non-GMO & More," helping consumers choose products not tampered with at the genetic level and not sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides (for the most part).

The new labels helps consumers realize that organic food enhances soil biodiversity and health. The label opens people's eyes to the fact that organic food has a higher concentration of minerals and antioxidants that are essential for human health. Organic is more than being just non-GMO. Organic values the entire process of how food is grown all the way down to using non-synthetic fertilizers and ensuring animals are treated humanely.

The California farmers' group that designed the label wants the public to know that the word "organic" is not some kind of scam to raise prices on food. It's about improving human and planetary health. In a press release, the organization says the new label "underscores the prohibition of GMOs in organic and recognizes the many contributions of organic to a healthier world."
