(NaturalNews) Business entrepreneur, author, media personality and former Libertarian vice presidential candidate Wayne Allyn Root says he now has undeniable proof that the Obama Administration used the Internal Revenue Service as a hit squad targeting conservative groups leading up to the 2012 presidential election.

In a column for The Blaze, Root lays out his evidence in meticulous fashion, comparing the "IRS scandal" to the Watergate scandal of the early 1970s as one that "just won't go away."

When the scandal first broke, and since, there have attempts to tie it directly to the White House and, in particular, the Oval Office and the president himself, but so far those attempts have proven fruitless.

Root says that has "just changed."

He writes:

We've seen in the media that 6,400 of [former IRS executive] Lois Lerner's missing emails have been found.

We've seen in the media that the IRS is once again trampling on the rights of taxpayers by dramatically cutting customer service, while lavishing IRS employees with bonuses.

We've seen in the media that the IRS is back to its old tricks, still trying to hurt conservative fundraising organizations -- most recently challenging the tax-exempt status of
[former top advisor to President George W. Bush] Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS.

But the revelations I'm about to unveil make all that look like child's play. An IRS scandal involving nameless faceless Tea Partiers, or billionaire Super PACs, or generic taxpayers is not the stuff that brings down a presidency.

But the story you're about to read is Obama's Watergate.

Criminal violations?

Root says he was targeted and persecuted by the Obama Administration's IRS in what he says was an attack orchestrated and coordinated by the highest levels of government and the Democratic Party. And he says his allegations are now provable after he managed to obtain his IRS files under a Freedom of Information Act request, via the legal watchdog group Judicial Watch.

"As you'll see... my own IRS tax files not only implicate the IRS, but a leading Democrat U.S. senator in a criminal conspiracy to silence a critic of the president," writes Root.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, talked about how difficult and "scandalous" it was to obtain Root's own IRS files, on his behalf.

"The Obama IRS obstructed the release of Wayne Root's tax documents. The abuse of process Judicial Watch and Wayne suffered through to get these documents is scandalous," Fitton said. "Now we know why the Obama IRS was hesitant to give Wayne his own IRS files. These documents show the Obama IRS scandal was more than just suppressing the Tea Party, it was also about auditing critics of President Obama. Richard Nixon had to resign from office for less."

Root says he was targeted by "leading Democrats" and that his evidence has now been turned over to a U.S. Senate panel looking into the IRS scandal.

Pattern of abuse

In summary, according to Root:

-- Presidents, by law, are forbidden from using the IRS as a tool against political enemies -- and Obama appears to have done just that;

-- by law, the IRS cannot base any of its actions, especially audits, on political considerations;

-- the documentation he has obtained allegedly show that a) the president improperly directed the IRS to go after conservative groups, and b) the IRS improperly complied;

-- Root was hit with successive IRS audits, the second one coming just five days after he won his first case in 2012, an act that tax attorneys and other tax experts have called unprecedented (Root won his second case, too);

-- before the first audit was launched, Root says he was actually contacted by an IRS auditor who "lectured" him for several minutes about his "political views;"

-- Root says two government tax officials told him such phone calls never happen;

-- a U.S. senator from Oregon (unnamed) was making inquiries to the IRS regarding Root, even though Root lives in Nevada;

-- the auditor wrote in Root's file that he had spent quite some time "researching" Root's political views;

-- Root plans to testify before the inquiring Senate panel about his findings.
