Pulling healthy teeth, cutting off a leg, killing a psychiatric patient: nightmare at Parkland Hospital

(NaturalNews) Parkland Hospital has just agreed to pay a one-million-dollar fine for creating a series of patient nightmares. Since 2011, the Dallas hospital has been under federal oversight for "widespread patient-safety problems," reports The Dallas News.

But new specifics have come to light. Jessie Mae Ned, a housekeeper at Parkland, underwent knee-replacement surgery. The resident who performed the operation botched it. In the aftermath, Ned's left leg had to be amputated.

The hospital agreed to pay Ned $100,000, spread out over 10 years (!), on the condition that she never speak about the surgery or make negative comments about Parkland.

George Cornell, a psychiatric patient at Parkland, was improperly restrained and isolated. He subsequently died. No one knew about this death until the Dallas News exposed it in a 2011 article.

Another psychiatric patient was admitted to the hospital with a loaded gun. A third patient had a cigarette lighter and set her clothing on fire. (In light of the hospital's crimes, perhaps carrying a loaded gun was evidence of sanity.)

A dental resident at Parkland was told to remove badly damaged teeth from a patient who had been injured in a car accident. Astonishingly, the resident ignored those teeth and instead extracted teeth from the other side of the patient's mouth.

According to the one-million-dollar fine and settlement agreement signed by signed by Parkland Hospital's CEO (strangely, without the knowledge or approval of the hospital's board), "A male nurse was found to have unnecessarily assessed [groped] a male patient's genitalia on two occasions during evening hours. The patient had been admitted for a badly infected finger."

Parkland's operating rooms were found to be unclean.

The capper on the shocking situation at Parkland? The hospital's board has just proposed its 2013 budget: $1.3 billion, a third of which would be paid by Dallas County taxpayers.

How many more crimes would be discovered, if those taxpayers were allowed to investigate Parkland on their own, to decide whether their hard-earned money should be allocated to hospital administrators?

On July 26, 2000, Dr. Barbara Starfield's landmark review, "Is US health really the best in the world?" was published by the Journal of the American Medical Association. Starfield revealed that the US medical system kills, like clockwork, 225,000 people a year, making it the third leading cause of death in America. 119,000 of those deaths were laid at the door of hospital treatment.

We now have a portrait of what happens in one US hospital.

With the broad expansion of national health insurance, under Obamacare, bringing millions of new people into the medical system, we can expect a major increase in the hospital population, and a consequent spread of Bedlam-like nightmares.
