Editor's Review:

Women considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause symptoms and health benefits should read this controversial, provocative book first. "Advertising and research dollars are spent trying to convince women that estrogen will cure everything from heart disease to Alzheimer's," writes John R. Lee, M.D., "but there is scant evidence for any of these claims and reams of evidence that synthetic estrogens are highly toxic and carcinogenic." Lee has studied the research and concludes that estrogen is not the magic bullet for protection against heart disease and osteoporosis, nor does it retard aging. Natural progesterone, instead, puts postmenopausal women's hormones in balance, says Lee. He cites study after study that indicates that natural progesterone, obtained in cream form, delivers what the usual HRT only promises.

"Menopause as a disease has been largely fabricated by physicians and the pharmaceutical industry," says this leader of a "quiet but powerful revolution" regarding HRT. What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause covers the benefits of natural progesterone, the history and politics of the medical and drug establishment, the biochemistry and dynamics of hormones and how they get out of balance, and how to prevent hormone imbalance and stay healthy. Lee empowers you to ask hard questions of your doctor. Reader Reviews:

As a professional health specialist I have read extensively about natural progesterone cream and hormones since my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2001 and have been using it since that time instead of the drugs and radiotherapy recommended by my doctors. Dr Lee's work is remarkable but you must read carefully otherwise you will be under misapprehensions like some of these other reviewers who are still making mistakes about the difference between natural progesterone and synthetic progestins! They are molecularly different and natural progesterone does not carry the same side effects or risks that the synthetic ones do! I am the Hormone Health Expert for the CMA and Bio Vitality Limited where we also advocate hormone testing so that you do not supplement if you do not need it! It's really what the doctors should be doing before they give out hormones of any description.I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids seven years ago, and through browsing the internet I found out about Dr. Lee and this book. I took his advice, and I must have indeed been progesterone deficient because using the natural progesterone did clear up the fibroids and repair some other problems I was having. Dr. Lee also has other good pieces of advice that most physicians will not talk about in the realm of nutrition and environmental toxins. Especially eye-opening was his discussion of how non-organic meats and milk are full of estrogen due to modern farming methods. In retrospect, he apparently was also right about Premarin, as in the past three years medical trials showed this drug to be so harmful that the test was in fact halted due to its initial findings. Prior to that it was being passed out like candy by physicians to practically all menopausal women. However, I do have an aunt who has been on it for over twenty years, closely monitored, and her quality of life is probably higher because of it. This is because for her, specifically, the drug works without side effects. As for me, as I passed through menopause and continued to take progesterone, it began to cause problems for me. My blood pressure went up, I was constantly hyper, I had palpatations, and my blood sugar went up and down like a roller coaster. I took a saliva test for my hormones, and my progesterone was off the charts. The nutritionist I was working with said to stop the progesterone immediately. She also told me that although natural progesterone is a godsend to many women, there are some, like me, that are very sensitive to the cortisol related to progesterone and have the woes I described. Within three months of quitting the progesterone, everything returned to normal with the exception of my thyroid, which still requires supplementation to this day, three years later. I guess the moral to this story is that there is always something out there - whether it be a pharmaceutical or a natural product- that helps some people. Progesterone is one of those natural products, but please monitor yourself with regular hormonal saliva tests to insure that you personally are in balance. It's just too bad that proponents of natural cures and traditional physicians have to look at each other as enemies and not realize that both have something to add to the quality of life.Dr. Lee is not an OB/Gyn. be careful when reading this book. Recend clinical studies are not included in this book.

Furthermore, Dr. Lee is widely disregarded by his peers.Thank you, Dr. Lee for your book! I was on a calculated plan of natural progesterone for approximately 8 months which corrected many of the issues brought on by synthetic progestogens. Contrary to what some people are writing in their reviews, natural progesterone is NOT the same as the synthetic progestogens found in birth control pills or RU-486, nor can natural progesterone be used at the same amount each month or forever. I, for one, CANNOT use synthetic progestogens because of the problems they cause--leg cramping, sleeplessness, mood changes, blood clots, weight gain to mention a few. Dosage of natural progesterone totally depends on physical, monthly needs of the individual woman-some months, a little more, some months, a little less, and always under the guidance of physicians who understand and support the use of natural progesterone. Hurray to those who bring this information to the forefront and are not slaves of the pharmaceutical companies!Other reviewers have written about the incredible results they are getting with natural progesterone cream. Six months ago, I started using 20 mg. every night before bed and almost from the first I began to feel more relaxed, sleep better, and my hot flashes have almost completely disappeared. One added bonus is that after 4 months my doctor was able to reduce my thyroid med. dosage for the first time in 20 years! Of course, I use a natural form of thyroid (Armour), so women taking synthetic forms of thyroid may have an entirely different response. Natural hormones seem to complement and enhance each other, like the original hormones in the body did when we were younger. A good book on this is Dr. David Brownstein's book "The Miracle of Natural Hormones," and Dr. Erika Schwartz's book "The Hormone Solution" is also helpful.
