(NaturalNews) Perseverance, passion and tenacity are three characteristics needed to change the status quo. Luckily, a coalition of activists dedicated to ending water fluoridation has all three of those virtues, and then some.

Nearly one year ago today, local activists stood before the Austin City Council protesting the renewal of the city's $1 million dollar contract with their fluoride supplier. It wasn't the first time Austinites spoke out against water fluoridation, as the city has been dumping this industrial byproduct into the water system since the 1970s.

Despite the presentation of mounting research proving that fluoride does more harm than good, as they have done many times before, the Austin City Council voted to renew its fluoride contract.

While anti-fluoridation activists may have lost that battle, this year they're back with a vengeance and have a lot more resources on their side.

To start, in January of this year, Austin elected a new city council, and for the first time ever adopted single-member districts that geographically represent the city more fairly, thanks to a diverse coalition of grassroots organizations that helped pass the measure in 2012.

Special anti-fluoridation PSA launches in Austin, airing on The Dr. Oz Show

Aside from a mostly fresh-faced new city council, anti-fluoride activists have another tool up their belt, a Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring Ed Begley Jr. that describes the adverse health effects of water fluoridation, including dental fluorosis and lowered IQs.

The PSA, titled "Help Get the F Out!" is set to air during The Dr. Oz Show from 3 to 4 P.M. Central on Austin's KTBC Fox 7 beginning February 17, once per day for two weeks. The air time is made possible by a generous donation from the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine.

The special anti-fluoridation PSA is sure to raise more awareness than ever before; however, in order to truly reach the masses, an IndieGogo campaign was launched on February 16 to help raise money towards keeping the PSA on air, as well as purchasing more Austin TV spots in several different time slots.

"Help Get the F Out...of Austin" IndieGogo campaign is aiming to raise $10,000 by March 28, 2015, every penny of which will go to keeping the PSA on the air. Donors will receive various "perks," including all-natural fluoride-free toothpaste, holistic dental care guides, fluoride shields and a variety of organic superfood samplers and herbal cleanses that support natural detoxification.

Ivan Esteves, a passionate grassroots activist who is also the brains behind the anti-fluoride PSA, believes that clean water is directly tied to consciousness, and if we can get the water clean, then hopefully we can get people thinking clearly again, which will create a chain reaction in terms of taking action against water fluoridation.

The City of Austin, like many cities across the nation, spends millions of dollars on contracts with fluoride providers to fluoridate, or pollute, the region's water supply based on a few inconclusive studies alleging that it protects children's teeth from cavities. Not only is ingesting fluoride unnecessary to prevent tooth decay, but it's been known to cause fluorosis in children, a condition that changes the appearance of tooth enamel, leaving permanent white stains.

A study published by Harvard University in 2012 recognized the adverse health effects of water fluoridation, including statistics which showed that "children in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQs than those who lived in low fluoride areas."

Updated science tells us that fluoride is bad, hence the reason to get it the F out of our water supply! With a new city council, and a little bit of financial help from the public, Austin has a real fighting chance of eliminating this toxicant from our water once and for all.
