(NaturalNews) With what seems like hundreds of new supplements coming out on the market every day, it's impossible to keep track of them and very difficult to determine whether they are required in your health regimen. If you think that you are already getting enough of these two vitamins, you might want to consider that most climates do no support proper vitamin D exposure, and if you use sunscreen, you are blocking the key process for your body to absorb and produce it. Other forms of vitamin D found in foods and supplements are either fortified or synthetic, and therefore not well absorbed by the body.

As for vitamin A, it can also be difficult to obtain. Beta-carotene is the precursor of retinol, the active form of vitamin A, and while it is converted into vitamin A in humans, only 3% gets converted in a healthy adult. First of all, ensure that your fermented cod liver oil is not put through a destructive manufacturing process which includes alkali refining, bleaching, and deodorization which destroys the natural vitamins A and D, while damaging delicate omega-3 fatty acids. Ironically, synthetic vitamins are typically added back in to meet desired labeling requirements.

Dr. Weston A. Price also always gave cod liver oil along with high-vitamin butter oil. He found that cod liver oil on its own was relatively ineffective; combining it with high vitamin butter oil produced excellent results. The butter oil contains vitamin K2, which works synergistically with vitamins A and D. Quality sources of vitamin K include grass fed animal protein, butter, and cheeses.
