(NaturalNews) Citizens' protests have recently impacted two important pieces of legislation. On May 6, 2013 New York legislators planned to propose laws to allow physicians to give minors the vaccinations for Hepatitis B and HPV without parental consent. In response to public outcry, initiated by an action alert, this potentially dangerous law was withdrawn. In other news, legislation proposing severe restrictions on compounding pharmacies, which could negatively impact users of alternative medicine, was revised to remove the most dangerous limitations. These two recent outcomes show that individuals can make a difference by protesting legislation that limits important health freedoms.
NY Legislation threatened to allow physicians to give the Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines to minors without parental consent
On May 6, several NY legislators planned to propose legislation to permit licensed physicians to give minors both the Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines without parental consent. Both of these vaccines have failed to prove their effectiveness and safety. Thousands of documented cases of injury and death of infants, children and young adults, in reaction to these vaccines, have been reported to the National Vaccine Information Center. Because of public protests resulting from an action alert sent by http://www.greenmedinfo.com and repeated by http://vactruth.com, this legislation was withdrawn.
Compounding pharmacies, essential providers of medications used by alternative practitioners, threatened by legislation
The Alliance for Natural Health, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to political advocacy to ensure access to holistic medicine, serves an important role as watch dog and advocate for health freedoms. On May 7 the Alliance sent an action alert to its members advising of draft legislation by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) that would act to eliminate important compounding medications. Examples of compounding medications commonly used in alternative health include DMSA (used to treat metal toxicity), Low Dose Naltrexone, bio-identical hormones and parasite medications. Due to an overwhelming response by interested citizens and support by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), who is a strong advocate for natural health, a second draft announced on May 17, removed much of the threatening language. The proposal still holds potential threats to compounding drugs such as the bio-identical hormone estriol, due to language that allows entire categories of compounding drugs to be banned by the FDA. A third draft will be announced May 20 and the committee will vote on May 22. For more information and to take action, see http://www.anh-usa.org
The importance of education and advocacy to fight for health freedoms
Thomas Jefferson is famously paraphrased as saying: "If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicine they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny".
At a time when individuals often feel helpless to enact changes, it is important to remember that legislators will often respond to an outpouring of voter protests. Legislators do care about the support of their constituents. The few moments required to make a phone call or sign a petition can positively impact many important health freedom issues. The Alliance for Natural Health is an important advocate for natural health. Several important organizations are likewise committed to health freedoms, education and advocacy regarding immunizations. These groups have free newsletter and action alerts which can keep citizens well informed on important immunization news. They include: the National Vaccine Information Center (http://www.nvic.org), http://vactruth.com, and the International Medical Council on Vaccinations (http://www.vaccinationcouncil.org).
