(NaturalNews) What's more powerful than the leaders of the mightiest military on earth? What has more leverage than a top military commander with millions of troops at his disposal? What leads the strongest, most logical men to willfully destroy their own lives and leave their country vulnerable?

Romantic love, with all of its primal, procreative urges.

Romantic love; the kind that urges you to meld with a like-minded mate. The force that inspires you to write untraceable letters to a forbidden lover. The irresistible urge for which you will risk your family, your security, your country and your life!

Thank you, David Petraeus for the reminder.

Of course, there is more to the Patraeus saga than we are being told. Still, the forces of evolution (or insert your own forces here) care for little else beyond the continuation of the human species (or insert your own motivation here). Even your own dearly held values can easily give way to the power of attraction that has roots in romantic, procreative love. This is at the heart of the matter here.

The lessons the average person can extract from the Petraeus drama are timeless. Here are just a few:

Respect the force of love.

Procreative love brings the even strongest people to their knees, making them vulnerable to all kinds of mischief. Once they give in, they may find themselves in the most tangled of webs, with far-reaching consequences. Any force that has the undiscriminating potential to nullify obligations to families, communities and nations simply must be respected.

Most of us work hard to focus and contain the power of procreative love in the right place, with someone that we value and trust; a single person with whom we can take responsibility for the outcomes of our love. When contained in this way, procreative love is like a warm campfire.

Channel your urges toward your mate.

My opinion is that human beings are best suited to mate for life. Even thought it doesn't always work out, it is still the best model. Mating for life provides personal and cultural stability, and has the best potential for raising healthy children. We have a long way to go before our species gets it right, but there may be no better way.

So, it is important to stay wildly attracted to your mate. Do you know how to keep the spark alive? Have you consciously decided to make your long-term relationship interesting? Are you still learning new things about your partner? Are you making efforts to keep your partner curious, interested and attracted to you?

If not, you should worry.

Avoid complacency like the plague.

Perhaps more than any other factor, complacency destroys romantic relationships. Imago Relationships International warns those in long-term relationships to fuel the fire of each others' passion. Otherwise, the marriage is at risk for loss of intimacy, with infidelity not far behind.

Imago claims it is not boredom in the bedroom that causes couples to stray. Complacency, and ignoring each others' new found passions, pursuits and creative endeavors opens the door for unhappiness in marriages.

Be proactive with your love.

Don't wait until you find an illicit email that exposes your cheating partner. Take the initiative to keep the relationship healthy and prevent problems from developing.

Have you considered taking a couples' communication skills course, just because it is a good thing to do? Do you hold regular planning meetings with each other to make sure your relationship priorities are appropriate? Do you take thoughtful action to let your lover know she is loved before she has a chance to question it?

Wake up, couples! Procreative love is a fire that can warm your life, or burn it down.
