Orville tricks popcorn lovers with non-GMO claims

by Derek Henry

(NaturalNews) The informed public is getting used to marketing lies and deception around food products and the claims made on the packaging. Whether it is "all-natural," "gluten-free" or "low-fat," there is always more to consider before eating the product if one wants to avoid toxins and digestive disaster.

One label that has recently been added to some products, much to the dismay of its proponents, is the non-GMO label. Despite assurances from the creators of GMOs that they are the greatest gift to humankind since the sun, detractors have decided that they would like their consumers to know that they are not participating in altering nature and will provide evidence through labeling.

In this vein, Orville Redenbacher, the popcorn king, has conveniently informed consumers that their popcorn is made with 100% whole grain, non-GMO corn. However, before one gives Orville the virtual high five on the other side, they should consider one VERY important fact.

GMO popcorn doesn't exist.

That's right, our pants have been pulled down again by clever marketing, and this time Orville Redenbacher is the prankster. Not to be outdone, other label-happy companies are pulling the same trick; to fool the informed consumer into thinking their "non-GMO" product is superior to those companies that don't make the same claims.

However, these companies didn't fool one of the top watchdogs of GMO technology, the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT). Jeffrey Smith, executive director and GMO expert, has assured people that even though almost 90% of corn grown and eaten in the USA is GMO corn, popcorn comes from a different seed, and it has NOT been genetically modified. Even better news, according to the IRT, popcorn does not cross-pollinate with GMO varieties of yellow and white corn either.

So while one can assume that snacks like Doritos are riddled with GMO corn, the good news is that all varieties of popcorn are currently not affected. That's good news for the popcorn lover who would like to avoid any GMO products. However, conventional popcorn is a heavily sprayed crop, so it is still a wiser choice to choose organic anyway.

In order to make popcorn one of the healthier snacks to enjoy, avoid microwaving popcorn in a bag and dousing it with non-organic butter and iodized salt. A much healthier solution would be to cook it the old fashioned way, on the stove, and use options like grass-fed butter or coconut oil, and a full-spectrum sea or pink Himalayan salt.
