Malaysian authorities detained three containers bound for Israel at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Johor on August 19, according to manifests reviewed by Bloomberg. On August 7, the same agency stopped a container arriving from the Philippines on suspicion that it contained weapons, according to the report. The container was found to be bound for Elbit Systems, an Israeli military technology firm, and was also held at the port.

The earlier incident preceded the August 19 detention of the three Israel-bound containers. Malaysian authorities have not released additional details on the contents or outcome of the investigation into the August 7 container.

The seizure of the Elbit Systems-bound container was reported by Middle East Eye, which noted that the seizure came as Kuala Lumpur enforces restrictions on exports to Israel and fulfills its commitments under The Hague Group ^[4]. Malaysian Policy and Official Statements

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said at the time that his country would not serve as a channel for trade capable of supporting or contributing to "the cruelty of the Israeli regime," according to the report. Anwar barred Israeli firm ZIM Integrated Shipping Services from Malaysian ports in December 2023.

The commune was founded by former Coinbase executive Balaji Srinivasan and promotes the creation of quasi-sovereign startup societies built on cryptocurrency and minimal regulation.

Johor's chief minister said at the time that the state would not be used as a base for movements working against Malaysian law and sovereignty. The shutdown and deportation order underscore Malaysia's heightened scrutiny of foreign nationals, particularly those connected to Israel, amid regional tensions.
