“All The Things That Matter” on BrightU: The Old Covenant was not God’s original plan

  • In episode 2 of "All The Things That Matter," Brad Cummings argued the Old Covenant (established at Mount Sinai) was not God's original plan but a broken, obsolete system born from humanity's fear and delegation to Moses instead of direct relationship with God.
  • The Old Covenant's conditional structure—"obey to be blessed"—led to repeated failure, trapping people in a cycle of repentance without true transformation, rooted in human effort rather than divine grace.
  • The original covenant with Abraham (where God alone made the promise) foreshadowed the New Covenant—grace-based, requiring no human work, only trust in God's unilateral commitment.
  • Many churches preach a mix of grace and works ("saved by grace, sanctified by grit"), which Cummings calls a disguised Old Covenant, perpetuating shame instead of embracing Christ's shame-removing grace.
  • The solution is surrendering to the New Covenant, where God writes His law on hearts and fulfills His promises—shifting from human effort to divine intimacy and transformation.

In episode 2 of "All The Things That Matter," aired on July 6, Dr. Sherri Tenpenny and Brad Cummings dropped a theological bombshell: The Old Covenant was never God's original design—it was humanity's failed attempt at religion.

"The Old Covenant is actually not the original covenant," Cummings declared. "It's old because it's broken, it's obsolete and it doesn't work."

For many Christians, this assertion turns traditional theology on its head. Most believers, and even pastors, can't identify where the Old Covenant was enacted (Mount Sinai), yet its shadow still looms over modern faith, trapping millions in a cycle of shame and empty promises.

Cummings, a former pastor and co-author of "The Shack," explained that at Mount Sinai, God intended to speak directly to His people—but fear drove them to delegate the relationship to Moses.

"They rejected God's voice meant for all of them," Cummings said. "They told Moses, 'You go talk to God, then tell us what He said and we'll obey.' That's where the Old Covenant was born—a contract based on human effort, not divine intimacy."

This conditional agreement—"If you obey, then I'll bless you"—set the stage for centuries of failure. "The whole history of Israel is, 'We forsook God, got in trouble, cried out and He rescued us,'" Cummings noted. "It's a treadmill of repentance without transformation."

The real shocker? The Old Covenant wasn't Plan A. The original covenant—established with Abraham—revealed God's heart: a unilateral promise requiring no human effort. "God put Abraham to sleep," Cummings explained. "He walked through the sacrifice alone, saying, 'I'll do this work. Just trust Me.' That's the New Covenant in seed form—grace before the cross."

Yet today, Cummings argued, most churches preach a hybrid gospel: "We're saved by grace, but sanctified by grit. It's still the Old Covenant in disguise—'Try harder, do better.'" The fallout is a faith crippled by shame. "Religion is all about shame management," Cummings said. "Jesus is about shame removal."

He pointed to the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve hid after sinning. "God didn't rage at them—He asked, 'Who told you you were naked?' He wanted to restore the walk-and-talk relationship. But we're still hiding, still negotiating with fig leaves.”

The solution? Surrender to the New Covenant. "Salvation isn't a prayer; it's a pregnancy," Cummings said. "God's life in us is meant to grow until we 'give birth' to His nature." Cummings' message is urgent: The Old Covenant is a dead end. The New Covenant is God's vow—"I will write My law on your heart. I will do this."

"Which contract would you want?" Cummings asked. "One based on your promises—or God's?"
