HYPOCRITE: “Climate advocate” Mark Zuckerberg slammed for purchasing $300M superyacht
05/24/2024 // Zoey Sky // Views

Critics are up in arms after billionaire Mark Zuckerberg allegedly purchased a $300 million superyacht. One of the world's richest men and founder of Meta, Zuckerberg has reportedly spent millions on the superyacht he christened Launchpad.

The sleek superyacht looks like something out of a movie, with stunning features and cutting-edge tech, but critics have called the billionaire's recent purchase a "climate hypocrite's hideaway." Zuckerberg's new yacht became a social media sensation shortly after a viral TikTok video capturing its impressive visuals was posted online.

Launchpad is currently docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The superyacht spans 118 meters and it made its maiden voyage in March across the Atlantic. Launchpad was designed by the Swedish-based Espen Oin International and built by the Dutch shipyard Feadship.

The superyacht features "a sleek, multilayered exterior with a robust steel hull and an [aluminum] superstructure," according to SuperYacht Times. (Related: Mark Zuckerberg commissioning secret DOOMSDAY BUNKER in Hawaii, complete with blast-resistant door.)

Launchpad has a gross tonnage of 5,000 gross tons and it can cruise at speeds of up to 24 knots, or approximately 27 miles per hour, providing an impressive cruising experience for the billionaire owner.

The superyacht also holds the distinction of being the 45th largest yacht in the world. Launchpad even has a helipad in case Zuckerberg changes his mind and wants to catch a sudden flight while traveling the seas.

With his alleged purchase of the superyacht Launchpad, Zuckerberg joins other tech billionaires who also own superyachts, including Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Zuckerberg branded a "climate hypocrite"

While Zuckerberg's expensive new yacht has the internet in a frenzy, some mocked the expensive purchase. Some were also confused by the billionaire's choice of transportation.

The internet has poked fun at Zuckerberg, who is a vocal advocate for fighting climate change. The internet previously questioned why the Meta owner has a private jet that allegedly burned over $158,000 worth of fuel within two months.

Launchpad is also being criticized as yachting is one of the most polluting activities an individual can engage in. To illustrate, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's yachts reportedly emit more than 22,000 tons of carbon a year, exceeding the emissions of some small countries.

Meanwhile, Bezos' $500 million yacht, Koru, is another most-polluting billionaire purchase that contributes over 7,000 tons of carbon annually.

While Zuckerberg's superyacht's environmental toll remains to be seen, the stark juxtaposition with his outspoken climate activism has sparked online debates.

One user posted on X: "Hey look it’s Mark Zuckerberg‘s yacht. I’m sure him flying private jets with Bill Gates is helping to plan it though. It's all our fault instead."

Some people have also speculated that Zuckerberg spent his 40th birthday on the superyacht Launchpad after his recent online posts.

For months, rumors have been circulating that the Meta founder purchased Launchpad. But in the yachting world, where privacy is valued, no one would confirm the superyacht's owner.

Feadship, the ship's builder, claimed last March it is "standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs or delivery, etc." Representatives for Zuckerberg did not respond to requests for comment about the superyacht.

However, there is more evidence proving that Zuckerberg owns Launchpad. The superyacht arrived in Panama on May 14, having made its way there from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A private jet tracker also showed that Zuckerberg's plane landed in Panama on the same day. Judging by his Instagram post, there is a strong indication that Zuckerberg was on board.

With these clues and other details linking Zuckerberg to the superyacht, many believe that he is likely now traveling in his expensive new superyacht.
