Zelensky complains about the West “turning a blind eye” toward Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a thinly veiled criticism of the country's allies in the West, lamenting that they have "turned a blind eye" on Kyiv.

The comedian-turned-president took to X to air his grievances, which followed an overnight attack by Russia on five Ukrainian regions – Kharkiv, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv and Odesa. The said attack utilized missiles and Shahed drones, the latter being supplied by Moscow's ally Iran. Many buildings linked to Ukraine's energy infrastructure were targeted by the overnight attack, according to the Daily Express.

"Overnight, Russia fired more than 40 missiles and about 40 drones at Ukraine. There was another heinous missile attack on Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region. They also targeted objects in Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Odesa regions," Zelensky wrote.

"Some missiles and Shahed drones were successfully shot down – unfortunately, only a part of them. Russian terrorists have once again targeted critical infrastructure. I thank everyone engaged in recovery efforts after the attack, as well as to every warrior of our air defense system who was on guard."

Zelensky then reiterated the need for "air defense systems and other defense assistance, not just turning a blind eye and having lengthy discussions." According to him, Ukraine's neighbors in Europe are aware of the "critical need" for such air defense systems.

"I am grateful to everyone in the world who truly supports Ukraine's struggle for life. I thank every leader who will not remain silent, who will continue to support us and [who will] condemn Russian terror," the Ukrainian leader continued.

"Right now, with our ability to overcome Russian terror [sic], the world can demonstrate that all terror is treated equally as a crime. However, if Russia is allowed to continue doing so; if Russian missiles and Shahed drones continue to strike not only Ukraine but also the resolve of our allies; this will amount to a global license for terror."

Zelensky also laments "Americans backing Russia"

According to the Express, Kyiv is concerned about its lack of ammunition and manpower in its fight against Russia. To address shortages in the latter category, Ukraine has expanded its mobilization to bring in more men. Zelensky himself recently signed legislation lowering the age of conscription – from 27 to 25 – to make up for this shortfall. On April 10, President Joe Biden called on Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives to pass the $60 billion Ukraine aid bill. The measure is currently stalled in the lower chamber of Congress, which has the GOP as the majority.

"There's overwhelming support for Ukraine among the majority of Democrats and Republicans," Biden remarked. "There should be a vote now."

Days later on April 12, Zelensky lamented how "Russian influence" has seeped into both the American political system and the global information field at large. POLITICO asked the Ukrainian president about his comment on recent statements made by two Republican lawmakers – Ohio Rep. Mike Turner and Texas Rep. Mike McCaul.

Both Turner and McCaul claimed that "pro-Russian propaganda" has seeped into the minds of their colleagues in Congress. This, they argued, is the reason why the $60 billion aid package for Ukraine failed to get the green light.

Zelensky said Russia has succeeded in distorting "the information field of the world," adding that the scale of Moscow's influence in the U.S. has been underestimated.

"They have their lobbies everywhere – in the U.S., in the [European Union] countries, in Britain, in Latin America [and] in Africa. When we talk about the [U.S] Congress, do you notice how they work with society in the United States?"

The Ukrainian leader further claimed that some U.S. citizens were helping Russia by spreading its ideas in America, though he did not mention any names. According to Zelensky, these people work in the U.S. media and deliver the appropriate messages – which are sometimes "very pro-Russian."

"They pump their narratives through the media," he remarked. "These are not Russian citizens or natives of Russia, no. They are representatives of certain media groups, citizens of the United States."
