Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and ex-pro wrestler Jesse Ventura lead list of possible RFK Jr. running mate
03/14/2024 // Laura Harris // Views

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) has confirmed that four-time National Football League quarterback MVP Aaron Rodgers and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura are on the top of his list for potential running mate.

In December, two months after ditching the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and declaring his presidential run as an independent candidate, RFK Jr. announced that he would name his running mate "fairly soon." RFK Jr. had previously approached former Democrat and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang. But all of them have reportedly declined.

"I'm looking for somebody who is aligned with me on some important issues, including unraveling the warfare state. I don't need someone who agrees with me on everything; I'm interested in someone who wants to end the division we face in this country," he told reporters at that time. "It's a good exercise for the American people to see political leaders who have high regard for each other, even if they don't have the same views on every issue."

Rodgers, widely regarded as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, has been outspoken on political and social issues, particularly about the harmful effects of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines.

Ventura, on the other hand, gained fame as a professional wrestler in the 1970s and '80s. He became a prominent figure in independent and third-party politics after winning the Minnesota gubernatorial election in 1998 as a member of the centrist Reform Party.

RFK Jr. revealed that he has been in continuous discussions with Rodgers for the past month and has maintained contact with Ventura since the former governor introduced him at a campaign event in Arizona in February.

RFK Jr. working to get ballot access in all 50 states and D.C.

As an independent candidate, RFK Jr. must name his vice presidential choice in the coming weeks in over half of the states and collect signatures to appear on the ballot.

Those are the stringent requirements for appearing on the ballots of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This can range from as low as just 275 signatures in Tennessee, 2,500 signatures in Nebraska, 5,000 signatures in Kansas and 10,000 in Missouri, to as high as 110,000 in Texas, 145,000 in Florida and 200,000 in California.

In turn, volunteers and pro-Kennedy super political action committees (super PACs) like the American Values 2024 (AV2024) have embarked on a nationwide effort to gather tens of thousands of signatures from citizens.

AV2024 has invested up to $15 million to secure ballot access for RFK Jr. in 10 key states – Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New York and Texas. Additionally, AV2024 has also poured resources into manually collecting signatures in these states.

To date, the independent's campaign claims they have already reached signature thresholds in Hawaii, Nevada, New Hampshire and Utah. The campaign also expects to be listed in the ballot soon in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina. (Related: RFK Jr. claims DNC is RIGGING presidential primaries to favor Biden.)
