Google News has become MORE biased since 2022: 63% of articles lean “left,” just 6% lean “right”
02/29/2024 // Ethan Huff // Views

The more time that passes, the more Google News skews the news to the left, a new analysis has found.

Compared to 2022 when 61 percent of Google News articles were aggregated from left-leaning media outlets, today's Google News pulls up liberal media outlet articles 63 percent of the time – this compared to just six percent from right-leaning media outlets.

In the days leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, searching for the term "election" in Google News pulled up a whopping zero results from media sites that are right-rated, lean right-rated and even center-rated. Back then, just three percent of Google News articles in general came from something other than a left-wing source.

For its 2023 analysis, AllSides looked at 974 article that appeared in Google News over a two-week period in October and November. Here is the breakdown of what came up:

• Four percent left-rated

• 59 percent lean left-rated

• 16 percent center-rated

• One percent lean right-rated

• Five percent right-rated

• 15 percent not rated

As you can see, Google News drives its users to the left in the vast majority of search cases – and especially when users try to pull up information about a coming election, which is sure to be the case once again in this 2024 presidential election year.

AllSides conducted searches for hot-button issues like "abortion," "climate change," "economy," "election," "Biden," and "immigration" when conducted its test searches.

Is it any surprise Google pushes leftist news?

All in all, the top sources that appear on Google News for just about any relevant issue searched include:

CNN (lean left bias)

The New York Times (lean left bias)

Reuters (center bias)

Fox News (right bias)

Yahoo! News (lean left bias)

"All of the top 10 sources curated were rated Lean Left or Left, other than Reuters and Fox News," AllSides notes.

Out of all the search terms evaluated in the analysis, media outlets on the right never accounted for more than 12 percent of the results, except when searching for the term "Biden."

For all of the search terms, lean left-rated media outlets always accounted for more than half of the results, except when searching for the term "immigration."

Overall, Google News pulls up CNN the most, no matter what a person searches for, coming up 16 percent of the time. This is followed by The New York Times at 12 percent, Reuters at six percent, and Fox News and Yahoo! News at five percent.

Further down on the list is CBS News and The Associated Press (AP), both of which come up four percent of the time; and NBC News, MSNBC and Al Jazeera, all of which come up two percent of the time.

"Compared to 2023, there was about a 13% decrease in Left-rated outlets and a 16% increase in Lean Left-rated outlets (+2% overall on the left). There was a 10% decrease in Center-rated outlets," AllSides reports.

"There was a 1% increase in Lean Right-rated outlets and a 2% increase in Right-rated outlets (+3% overall on the right). There was a 5% increase in outlets not rated by AllSides. From 2022 to 2023, both Right-rated outlets and Left-rated outlets increased almost in equal measure, while Center outlets decreased, leading to a mostly consistent left-leaning bias on the part of Google News."

Other popular news aggregation services, including Bing News, Apple News, NewsBreak and Yahoo! News, all similarly pull up left-leaning or far-left media sites a vast majority of the time.

"Just because the news is aggregated from different sources does not mean you are getting the full picture of different perspectives," AllSides warns.
