Donald Trump secures ENDORSEMENT from No. 2 GOP senator
02/28/2024 // Ramon Tomey // Views

Former President Donald Trump has secured an endorsement from the second-highest Republican in the U.S. Senate.

The Washington Examiner reported that Senate Minority Whip John Thune of South Dakota has formally endorsed Trump as the Republican Party's presidential nominee. Before this, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky also endorsed the real estate mogul as the GOP's nominee.

"The primary results in South Carolina make [it] clear that Trump will be the GOP nominee for president in this year's pivotal presidential election. The choice before the American people is crystal clear: It's Trump or Joe Biden," Thune said in a statement.

"I support former President Trump's campaign to win the presidency, and I intend to do everything I can to see that he has a [GOP] majority in the Senate working with him to restore American strength at home and abroad."

The Senate minority whip also remarked that the "disastrous" agenda being pushed by Biden and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) must be put to an end. He added that the country cannot handle "another four years of Bidenomics," alongside problems at the southern border and on the world stage.

In January, Thune said he would support whoever became the GOP's ultimate nominee. He added that Trump seems to be on a strong path toward victory in upcoming primaries – with his recent victory in South Carolina attesting to this. "I'm interested in what the people are saying, and voters are breaking heavily in his factor. He's in a commanding position," Thune said at the time. "I've said all along [that] I'll support the nominee – [and] if he's the nominee, I'll do what I can to help the team win the presidency and the Senate."

Other senators also backing Trump

Several GOP senators have also endorsed the former president.

Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso was among those who backed Trump early on. Meanwhile, Texas Sen. John Cornyn announced his endorsement of the front-runner after the latter's victory at the New Hampshire primary. Both Barrasso and Cornyn are seen as potential replacements for McConnell as the GOP's leader in the upper chamber of Congress.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott also endorsed Trump after suspending his own campaign for president. According to reports, some had remained hopeful that Scott would endorse former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley – who also served as governor of the Palmetto State. Haley appointed Scott to the Senate while she was chief executive of South Carolina.

In January, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed Trump following the latter's victory at the Iowa caucuses. Cruz told Sean Hannity of Fox News during a Jan. 16 appearance: "I am proud to endorse Donald Trump for President of the United States. I look forward to supporting him enthusiastically."

According to Cruz, Trump's Jan. 15 victory at the Iowa caucuses – with the former president taking 51 percent of the vote – was a dominating victory. "He won 98 of the counties; I believe this race is over," he told Hannity. Trump's landslide victory in the Hawkeye State at the time proved that the latter's candidacy was "compelling," added Cruz.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst and Utah Sen. Mike Lee also gave their endorsements to Trump. Thune's endorsement, alongside those of his colleagues in the Senate, underscores Trump's strong grip on the party.
