The White Coat Waste Project, an advocacy group against wasteful and cruel experiments on animals like dogs, cats and monkeys, has uncovered the "Wuhan-like experiments" of highly contagious and deadly diseases, including Ebola virus disease, the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), Lassa fever, Nipah virus and the bubonic plague.
These experiments were being done at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Montana, a government facility run by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and with links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.
According to the White Coat Waste report, the experiments include injecting pigs with Ebola and injecting monkeys with COVID-19. The researchers also allegedly studied the reaction of monkeys to viral hemorrhagic fever, which caused excessive bleeding and organ failure. In response to the findings, Sens. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Eric Schmitt (R-MO) have sent a letter to the NIH demanding to learn more about the "potentially risky research" being done at the Rocky Mountain Labs. Ernst has also called on Congress to immediately stop the grants for the experiments.
Furthermore, Justin Goodman, the senior vice president of the White Coat Waste Project, stated that Rocky Mountain Labs is currently expanding its animal testing labs using $125 million of taxpayer money that was diverted from COVID-19 relief funding. So, he argued that taxpayers have the right "to know how their money is being spent in barbaric NIH animal labs."
"We've uncovered how NIH gain-of-function researchers linked to EcoHealth and the Wuhan lab import primates to the Rocky Mountain Lab from Fauci's Monkey Island in South Carolina, infect them with viruses including Ebola and COVID, and then completely withhold pain relief while the animals suffer excruciating deaths," he said. "Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being spent in barbaric NIH animal labs that can cause a devastating lab leak and pandemic right here in the United States."
Study proves many infections and deadly pathogens have escaped from research labs
White Coat Waste has not found any concrete evidence of illegal activity at Rocky Mountain Labs. However, the organization claimed that experiments with the deadly pathogens the labs are using may cause a new pandemic.
A comprehensive study published in The Lancet Microbe has revealed that between 2000 and 2021, at least 16 pathogens reportedly escaped from research laboratories. The study authors warned that the reported cases might only be the "tip of the iceberg" due to a lack of standard reporting requirements.
The research team, which surveyed peer-reviewed articles and online reports in English, Chinese and German, identified 16 instances of pathogenic "escape" and 309 cases of lab-acquired infections involving 51 different pathogens. The majority of infections occurred due to procedural errors, biosafety breaches and inadequate risk mitigation procedures.
For instance, a large-scale outbreak of Brucella in 2019 originated from a biopharmaceutical plant in Lanzhou, China, due to poor sanitation practices. The plant released contaminated gas into the air, leading to infections in nearby areas. Another case involves a researcher in Singapore getting infected with the SARS virus in 2003 because of inadequate training. This person exposed others to the virus, risking a new outbreak. Similarly, in Taiwan in 2003, a researcher in a high-security lab was careless and got infected with SARS.
In an interview with The Defender, Francis Boyle, J.D., Ph.D., an international law professor at the University of Illinois and a bioweapons expert who drafted the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989, suggested that such incidents indicate a violation of the Biological Weapons Convention. Boyle advocated for the immediate shutdown of all Biosafety Level 3 and Biosafety Level 4 labs globally to prevent another pandemic.
"Generally speaking, these lab leaks indicate that the respective labs are engaged in the research, development, testing and stockpiling of their respective offensive biological warfare weapons in violation of the Biological Weapons Convention and, here in the U.S., in violation of the Biological Weapons Anti-Terrorism Act of 1989," he said.
