He issued this warning during a Jan. 5 rally in Iowa. Trump told the audience: "I just hope we get fair treatment. Because if we don't, our country's in big, big trouble. Does everybody understand what I'm saying?"
The former president's remarks came amid the U.S. Supreme Court agreeing on the same day as the rally to hear a case that stemmed from Colorado banning Trump from its primary ballot. The Colorado Supreme Court (CSC) earlier ruled that Trump is disqualified from the ballot based on Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment. Under the so-called "insurrection clause," candidates who engaged in "insurrection or rebellion" cannot run for office.
In their appeal to the country's high court, Trump's legal team argued that the Centennial State's voters have been disenfranchised under the CSC's ruling in December. "The CSC decision would … likely be used as a template to disenfranchise tens of millions of voters nationwide," the appeal continued.
Trump also found himself disqualified from the primary ballot in Maine following the ruling of Shenna Bellows, the secretary of state there. Bellows, a Democrat, also based her decision on the flawed interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment's "insurrection clause." However, it is worth noting that Trump himself has neither been charged with nor convicted of carrying out an insurrection. Just like the Colorado ruling, Trump's legal team filed an appeal against Bellows' ruling. Both the edicts from Colorado and Maine are on hold until the appeals play out, meaning that Trump's name remains on ballots for the time being.

The real estate mogul-turned-president also warned during his Iowa rally that Democrats are trying to sow public discord aimed at the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump had appointed three of its justices – Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett – during his presidential term.
"They're saying 'Oh, Trump owns the [U.S.] Supreme Court. If they make a decision for him, it will be terrible. It will ruin their reputations. He owns the [U.S.] Supreme Court. He put on three judges. If they rule in his favor, it will be horrible for them [and] we'll protest at their houses,'" Trump quipped.
"That puts pressure on people to do the wrong thing," he continued, comparing their actions to the late Bobby Knight, the legendary basketball coach. Knight, who coached several teams during his lifetime, was known for his raucous arguments with referees and other sports officials.
"Some conservatives have warned that if Trump is removed, leftist groups will routinely use Section Three [of the Fourteenth Amendment] against opponents in unexpected ways," the Epoch Times pointed out.
But Alina Habba, Trump's attorney and spokeswoman, expressed a more positive prediction. During an appearance on Fox News' "Hannity," she expressed the belief that the nation's high court will "step up" to reject the ballot decisions because it is "pro-law" and "pro-fairness."
"I think it should be a slam dunk in the [U.S.] Supreme Court. I have faith in them," Habba told program host Sean Hannity. "You know, people like Kavanaugh who the president fought for, who the president went through how to get into place. He'll step up."
