Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta struggling to remove child sexual abuse materials from Facebook and Instagram
12/07/2023 // Laura Harris // Views

Mark Zuckerberg's Meta Platforms appears to be having a hard time kicking out a vast network of pedophiles on Facebook and Instagram.

Back in June, the Big Tech firm established a child safety task force responsible for taking down accounts and content linked to pedophilia. This followed a discovery by researchers from the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst that Instagram's algorithms connected a web of accounts that engage in the spread of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

According to the the nonprofit Canadian Center for Child Protection (CCCP), a network of Instagram accounts each with as many as 10 million followers were live-streaming videos of child abuse. Meta claimed that it had taken down hundreds of accounts part of this network in late October. The researchers, however, found that the algorithm still promotes similar content despite Meta taking down hashtags associated with pedophilia. The problem isn't only limited to Instagram, as Facebook groups centered on sexualizing children also unite pedophiles under one umbrella. These also extend to the Messenger and WhatsApp platforms, also under Meta.

"We often wonder: Why is it that we can, within minutes, find these massive networks? Why is no one over there dealing with this?" asked CCCP President Leanna McDonald.

Meta turns a blind eye to the pedo problem

Despite several calls to take down CSAM and pedophiles' accounts, Meta has been reluctant to limit personalized content and user experiences, crucial to its status as the world's largest social media company. According to a spokesperson from the Menlo Park, California-based tech giant, simply blocking or removing features that connect people to appropriate content is not a sensible way to stop unwanted suggestions.

"Every day, our systems help connect millions of people with interesting and positive groups relevant to them," the spokesperson told the WSJ. Moreover, company documents reviewed by the news outlet stated that Meta executives instructed the integrity team to prioritize reducing "advertiser friction" over addressing safety issues like child exploitation.

These actions by Meta only prove the claims of Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) that the social media company enforces double standards – based on how it censors conservatives while ignoring child abusers.

During a Nov. 7 hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the senator accused Meta executives of deliberately ignoring information that reflected unfavorably on the company. Hawley asserted that Meta, particularly Facebook, actively collaborated with the Biden administration to censor First Amendment-protected speech during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic while ignoring child exploitation issues. He also referenced the Murthy v. Missouri lawsuit, formerly known as Missouri v. Biden, which accused Meta of censoring conservative political speech at the request of the Biden administration.

The Missouri senator also heard the testimony of Arturo Bejar, former director of engineering for Meta's Protect and Care team. The erstwhile Meta staffer disclosed that his daughter had been a target of online sexual predators.

Given this, Bejar shared how he had emailed Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg back in October 2021. He remarked that "one in eight children" on Facebook had received sexually inappropriate messages within the "last seven days," and that nearly one in three children had encountered "sexual advances" in general on the platform. However, neither Zuckerberg nor Sandberg met with him to discuss the matter.
