Auto dealers urge Biden to step on the brakes for ELECTRIC CAR mandates, citing decline in demand
12/03/2023 // Ramon Tomey // Views

Almost 4,000 automotive dealers called on the Biden administration to "tap the brakes" on its electric vehicle (EV) mandate, citing a drop in demand for electric cars.

The group of 3,882 dealers – under the aegis of EV Voice of the Customer – wrote an open letter to President Joe Biden, which was published online. It asked the chief executive to "slow down … proposed regulations mandating battery EV production and distribution."

According to the letter, the Biden administration "has proposed regulations that would essentially mandate a dramatic shift to battery EVs." This would increase "year after year until 2032 when two out of every three vehicles sold in America" would have to run on electricity.

"Currently, there are many excellent battery EVs available for consumers to purchase. The reality, however, is that EV demand today is not keeping up with the large influx of [electric cars] arriving at our dealerships, prompted by the current regulations. [Battery EVs] are stacking up on our lots."

The group pointed out that while "there was a lot of hope and hype" about EVs in 2022, that enthusiasm has largely fizzled out. "The supply of unsold battery EVs is surging, as they are not selling nearly as fast as they are arriving at our dealerships – even with deep price cuts, manufacturer incentives and generous government incentives," it continued. "While the goals of the regulations are admirable, they require consumer acceptance to become a reality. With each passing day, it becomes more apparent that this attempted EV mandate is unrealistic based on current and forecast consumer demand. Already, EVs are stacking up on our lots which is our best indicator of customer demand in the marketplace."

Customers are simply not ready to make the change

In 2021, Biden signed an executive order mandating that 50 percent of vehicles sold in the U.S. should run on electric power by 2030. "There's no turning back. The question is [whether] we will lead or fall behind in the race for the future," he said at the time.

"The push to get automakers to offer fewer and fewer gas-burning vehicles comes as the Biden administration has struggled to secure the massive federal investments in EV infrastructure that experts say is needed to make it viable for Americans on a wide scale," NBC News reported.

"Biden … called for $174 billion in federal spending to build a network for a half-million electric vehicle charging stations across the country, in a nod to one of the biggest impediments to EV adoption: Fear of running out of battery. But the bipartisan infrastructure deal he reached with Congress included just $7.5 billion for that priority."

Nevertheless, EV Voice of the Customer pointed out that "the majority of customers are simply not ready to make the change."

"They are concerned about BEVs being unaffordable. Many do not have garages for home charging or easy access to public charging stations. Customers are also concerned about the loss of driving range in cold or hot weather. Some have long daily commutes and don’t have extra time to charge the battery. Truck buyers are especially put off by the dramatic loss of range when towing. Today’s current technology is not adequate to support the needs of the majority of our consumers."

The group ultimately exhorted Biden to "tap the brakes" on his administration's "unrealistic" EV mandate.

"Allow time for the battery technology to advance; allow time to make battery EVs more affordable; allow time to develop domestic sources for the minerals to make batteries; [and] allow time for the charging infrastructure to be built and prove reliable. And most of all, allow time for the American consumer to get comfortable with the technology and make the choice to buy an EV."
