Israel’s stranglehold on U.S. politics prompts top UN official to resign over failure to stop “genocide” of Palestinians

Citing the body's failure to properly address the conflict between Israel and Palestine, Craig Mokhiber has resigned from the United Nations (UN), becoming the former director of the UN's human rights office (OHCHR) in New York.

Instead of doing the job it was tasked with doing, the UN has instead "surrendered to the power of the U.S.," Mokhiber stated, adding that American politicians have completely given in to the "Israeli lobby."

"The European, ethno-nationalist, settler colonial project in Palestine has entered its final phase," Mokhiber further claimed, citing the Zionist origins of modern-day Israel and the ethnic cleansing project that has been in the works for many decades.

"Once again, we are seeing a genocide unfolding before our eyes, and the Organization that we serve appears powerless to stop it," Mokhiber wrote in a letter to Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, that was published this week.

What's happening in Gaza is actually genocide, despite that word often being "subject to political abuse," Mokhiber clarifies

Just like the words "racism" and "antisemitism," which are among the most abused get-out-of-a-failed-political-debate cards, the word "genocide" has, to be fair, been wildly overused to describe situations that do not quite fit the bill. In the view of Mokhiber, however, it fits what Israel is doing to Gaza, even though the word genocide "has often been subject to political abuse."

"But the current wholesale slaughter of the Palestinian people, rooted in an ethno-nationalist settler colonial ideology ... leaves no room for doubt or debate," Mokhiber argues.

"This is a text-book case of genocide," he says, adding that the ultimate goal of Zionism and modern-day Israel is to expedite the "destruction of the last remnants of indigenous Palestinian life in Palestine."

The United States, the United Kingdom and "much of Europe," Mokhiber would go on to state, are all "wholly complicit in the horrific assault" of the indigenous people of Gaza, not only with their failure to address Israel's genocidal intentions but also by "actively arming the assault, providing economic and intelligence support, and giving political and diplomatic cover for Israel's atrocities."

Said "cover" is only amplified by "Western corporate media, increasingly captured and state-adjacent," Mokhiber continued, adding that Zionist-controlled media has been "continuously dehumanizing Palestinians to facilitate the genocide, and broadcasting propaganda for war and advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred."

Back in the day, the UN used to have some degree of "integrity," Mokhiber says – but no longer. All those "principles" and "authority" that the UN once relied on, including during the apartheid in South Africa, has been eroded as the UN continues to fail at stopping genocides, most recently in Rwanda and Bosnia, as well as the genocide of the Yazidis by the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISI), and the Rohingya in Myanmar.

"In recent decades, key parts of the UN have surrendered to the power of the U.S. and to the fear of the Israel Lobby, to abandon these principles and to retreat from international law itself," Mokhiber says. "We have lost a lot in this abandonment, not least our own global credibility. But the Palestinian people have sustained the biggest losses as a result of our failures."

In order to regain its credibility, in Mokhiber's view, the UN must adopt "the principled stance taken in cities around the world in recent days as masses of people stand up against the genocide, even at risk of beatings and arrest." The UN must also drop the "illusory two-state solution" for Israel and Palestine to peacefully coexist, and instead create a "single, democratic state in all of historic Palestine," which would require the "dismantling" of Israel, which he once again referred to as a "deeply racist, settler-colonial project."
