The Daily Mail shared the news in an Oct. 13 article, citing a separate report by the New York Daily News. According to the second outlet, NYC Mayor Eric Adams is expected to make the announcement on Oct. 20. Prior to the announcement, Adams had previously imposed a 30-day limit for shelter stays for adult migrants in July.
A source told the Daily News that in a similar vein as migrant adults, migrant families with children who can't find housing on their own will be able to return to the arrival center at the Roosevelt Hotel. The source added that families can reapply for shelter placement at the same.
The historic hotel, which closed down during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, has become the registering point for migrants. It is currently housing 3,000 border crossers bused from Texas through the efforts of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. One city official has even dubbed the Manhattan hotel "the new Ellis Island," referencing the immigration station that operated from 1982 to 1954. (Related: Stop by and see for yourself! According to the Mail, the Big Apple has a right to shelter law that Adams is desperately trying to amend as the city is buckling under the weight of the migrant crisis. Two organizations, the Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless, called the move "a stain on our city's long-standing reputation as a welcoming home for all."
But prior to the migrant crisis, Adams heralded the shelter requirement as a sign of NYC's empathy. This subsequently changed as city resources were ill-equipped to deal with the influx of illegals.
Given the city's crisis, the mayor has exhorted the federal government for funding and revisions to immigration policy. He warned that the Big Apple will shell out $12 billion over three years just to address the migrant influx. "This issue will destroy NYC," Adams warned in September.
Adams, Hochul are now singing a different tune when it comes to illegals
Also in September, Adams asked a court to allow the city to suspend the right to shelter law during a state of emergency where the shelter population of single adults increases at a rapid rate. On Oct. 11, the office of New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul filed a court document in support of the city's request, calling it reasonable.
The shelter requirement, which is unique to the Big Apple, has been in place in the city for more than 40 years. It requires the city to provide temporary housing for every homeless person. But Hochul voiced out her support of Adams' request, telling reporters that the mandate was never meant to apply to an international humanitarian crisis.
"I don't know how the right to shelter … can or should be interpreted to be an open invitation to eight billion people who live on this planet that if you show up in the streets of [NYC], that the city … has an obligation to provide you with a hotel room or shelter," she told reporters on Oct. 12.
Just like the NYC mayor, Hochul has also done a complete 180 on the issue of illegal immigrants. She earlier welcomed them with "open arms," complete with a pledge to house them. But three years later, the Democratic governor is singing a different tune and telling illegals to "go elsewhere" instead of the Big Apple.
"We have to get the word out that when you come to [NYC], you're not going to have more hotel rooms. We don't have capacity," she said during an interview with the fake news network. "So we have to also message properly that we're at a limit. If you're going to leave your country, go somewhere else."
