An electric car reportedly exploded on a driveway in a quiet residential street in the town of Bromborough, Merseyside in North West England, setting fire to a family's home.

The explosion occurred at around 9:51 p.m. on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 23, in the neighborhood of Cooks Acre, with county emergency services – Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) – rushing to the family home after receiving reports that a car was on fire. Neighbors reported hearing screams and popping noises like fireworks going and seeing flashing lights when the incident occurred. The house that burned down was a two-story family home. Local news outlets report that the fire completely blackened what remains of the home and its garage. Three fire engines were dispatched to the house and arrived at around 10 p.m., and crews immediately entered the house wearing breathing apparatuses to put out the blaze. The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes of their arrival.

A spokesperson for MFRS noted that emergency responders continued to carry out home fire safety checks on the properties on either side of the home that caught on fire for a few hours after the primary fire was put out. They left the scene at 12:21 a.m.

Local news outlets who visited the area to cover the story on Sunday, Sept. 24, noted that the house was still black with smoke. No injuries were reported.

Electric car's battery malfunctioned and exploded

One man who witnessed the event said the cause of the fire was a "malfunctioning electric car battery."

"I was in bed and heard this popping noise. It sounded like fireworks going off. I went outside with my mum and there were bright lights with a car up in flames over the road," said the witness. "The owner was in the house when it happened but got out. She told me this morning that the car was only a month old with a thousand miles on the clock and the car battery malfunctioned."

Another woman said: "I heard tires popping and people came out to see what was going on. Someone started screaming and people rushed out to help."

"I saw it happen and it looked like the fire was coming from where they charge the car," she continued. "The whole thing was up in flames by the end. It was so scary and my little girl was screaming because she thought something had happened to our house."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed that the incident occurred and that it is conducting a joint investigation into the incident with MFRS "to establish the cause of the fire."

"CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out, and anyone with any information or has captured the incident is asked to contact police," added the police in the statement.
