Trump’s ex-lawyer denies he will testify against the former president

Lin Wood, one of Donald Trump's former lawyers, has denied allegations of cooperating against the former president in the Georgia indictment, despite recent court documents revealing a different story.

"There's zero truth to that," said Wood, adding that he was simply responding to a subpoena. "I am always willing to go in under subpoena. I'll go testify and answer their questions, honestly, like I did in the grand jury."

Wood had been requested to testify next month. He was a prominent figure in promoting the claim that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen.

Going against the grand jury's recommendation, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who has been investigating efforts to influence the election results in Georgia, chose not to pursue charges against Lin Wood. Instead, she revealed in a court filing that Wood is listed as a witness for the state.

In the court documents, Willis explicitly stated: "L. Lin Wood is a witness for the state in the present case." This disclosure appears to contradict Wood's earlier denials of cooperating against Trump. (Related: Georgia district attorney prosecuting Trump has lengthy history of election denial.)

Willis' team also confirmed in the court filing that four of the Georgia fake electors are now witnesses for the prosecution. They are Vikki Consiglio, Gloria Godwin, James Carroll and Carolyn Fisher, who "are witnesses for the state."

Wood, whose request to retire his law license last July was granted, insisted he has nothing to do with the DA's case.

"I do not know why I am listed as a witness," he said. "I have had no discussions with the DA's office since I testified before the special grand jury several months ago."

Wood was one of the most prominent lawyers involved in the legal battles that followed the 2020 presidential election. He was part of Trump's legal team, which mounted numerous legal challenges in an attempt to overturn the election results.

Prosecutors trying to turn Trump's allies against him

If Wood does testify in the trial, he will become at least the second Trump ally to cooperate with prosecutors. Earlier this month, Mar-a-Lago IT worker Yuscil Taveras agreed to testify against Trump in a case related to classified documents.

Taveras initially denied any knowledge of conversations at Mar-a-Lago about security footage, but he later recanted his testimony and provided a statement implicating Trump and others in efforts to delete the footage.

Wood has been sued by former colleagues for breach of contract, faced a defamation lawsuit from a former QAnon ally, and was sanctioned in Michigan for misconduct related to election fraud lawsuits.

In May, the Georgia Bar held a trial to determine whether to disbar Wood and in July, he chose to surrender his law license rather than face potential disbarment.

This development marks an important turn in the ongoing legal proceedings involving Trump and his allies. The revelation of Wood's potential cooperation may have implications for other co-defendants in the case, such as Sidney Powell, and could potentially lead to more cooperation deals between Trump's associates and prosecutors.
