Amid escalating legal charges, “Big Guy” Joe Biden insists Hunter is INNOCENT
08/18/2023 // Laura Harris // Views

President Joe Biden stands firm in defending the innocence of his son Hunter, repeatedly insisting that he did "nothing wrong" despite mounting legal charges.

During a Democratic presidential primary debate in 2019, the elder Biden stated: "My son did nothing wrong. I did nothing wrong." Since then, Joe has consistently portrayed Hunter as innocent of any wrongdoing in different interviews and public statements. He has also insisted that both of them acted within the boundaries of the law.

He stressed Hunter's innocence during an interview with MSNBC this year, when questioned about the implications of the Department of Justice's (DOJ) investigation into his presidency. The elder Biden said: "First of all, my son has done nothing wrong. I trust him, I have faith in him, and it impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him."

Joe insisting on Hunter's innocence followed Attorney General Merrick Garland's Aug. 11 appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss as special counsel. The appointment rekindles the investigation into the younger Biden's business dealings and potential tax evasion. (Related: Hunter Biden pleads GUILTY to tax crimes, reaches deal on gun charge.)

Weiss' appointment as special counsel extends not only to the Hunter Biden probe, but also for any related matters that may arise during the investigation. A press release from the DOJ added that his probe could potentially include other Biden family members – including Joe himself.

The special counsel is no stranger to Hunter's illicit deals. Prior to his appointment, he previously investigated and pursued charges against the presidential son in the Bidens' home state of Delaware as a federal prosecutor.

House Republicans: Weiss appointment an alleged COVERUP by the Bidens

Garland's appointment of Weiss as special counsel to oversee the Biden investigation did not sit well with House Republicans.

Kentucky Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, denounced Weiss' appointment as an attempt to cover up alleged wrongdoing within the Biden family. He alleged that the DOJ was working to obstruct congressional oversight and hide evidence of the president's involvement in the Biden family's schemes.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, tweeted that "something was not right" regarding Weiss' appointment. He pointed to certain inconsistencies in the federal lawyer's previous statements regarding his authority and need for special counsel status.

Russell Dye, a spokesman for the Ohio congressman, expounded: "Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption. [He] has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it. We will continue to pursue facts brought to light by brave whistleblowers as well as Weiss’s inconsistent statements to Congress."

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California also took to Twitter. He reiterated that the appointment "cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption."

Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert also touched on the "sweetheart plea deal" Weiss arranged for the presidential son. She questioned whether the special counsel's actions would yield meaningful results.
