ABSURD: Biden administration asks for $3.3B to fund more housing for illegal migrants
08/15/2023 // Richard Brown // Views

President Joe Biden's administration has requested $3.3 billion for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to fund new travel and housing programs for illegal immigrants.

Fortunately, this request is not expected to pass the Republican-dominated Congress. Many Republicans, including Rep. Chip Roy and 14 other Texas lawmakers, are urging the majority to oppose funding for Biden's migration program. They argued that funding a federal agency at war with their state and people goes against their moral obligation to protect the nation.

"There should be no funding without proper border security," they said.

Mark Krikorian, director of the Center for Immigration Studies, vehemently opposed the request. "They want to use it to speed up the arrival of people who have no right to be here," he said. "The August 10 request for $3.3 billion funding is not all designed to promote more illegal immigration, but most of it it seems to be."

He added that there is resistance among Republicans to increase the DHS funding.

"If DHS was using the money to actually stop the flow of illegal aliens, Republicans will be falling all over themselves to vote for it," he said. "But that's not what this administration wants to do with the extra money for DHS – they want to use it to speed up the arrival of people who have no right to be here."

Biden's plans and why GOP opposes them

The president is proposing to create an eight-year path to citizenship for the nation's estimated 10.5 million illegal immigrants.

Republicans view the plan as a massive amnesty for people who entered the U.S. illegally. They argued that this undermines the rule of law and rewards those who have broken immigration laws.

Biden also wants to boost refugee admissions and preserve deportation relief for illegals who came to the U.S. as children.

But the Republicans argued that the plan omits the traditional trade-off of enhanced border security, which has been a key component of previous immigration reform efforts.

Biden also plans to open processing centers in Latin America that would allow qualifying migrants to legally enter the U.S., Canada or Spain. This is one of several policy proposals the Biden administration 'hopes' will reduce the shocking influx of illegal immigrants that have been coming since the public health emergency order known as Title 42 ended in May.

Title 42 was launched by the administration of former President Donald Trump at the start of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to prevent the spread of communicable diseases in immigrant detention centers.

Number of illegal immigrants up under Biden

Close to five million illegal immigrants have crossed the U.S. borders in Biden's first 18 months as president, according to a report by the Federation for American Immigration Reform. (Related: 4.9 Million illegal aliens blew past the US border in the 18 months since Biden was installed in office.)

By the end of July last year, 4.9 million entered the U.S., including 900,000 "gotaways" who escaped apprehension and have scurried into the American interior, according to Rita Li of the Epoch Times.

"Roughly the equivalent of the entire population of Ireland has illegally entered the United States in the 18 months President Biden has been in office, with many being released into American communities," said anti-immigration advocate Dan Stein.

Stein believes that the Biden administration's rollback of Trump-era immigration restriction policies has triggered the current mass migration surge. "The endless flow of illegal aliens and the incursion of lethal narcotics pouring across our border will not end until this administration demonstrates a willingness to enforce our laws," Stein remarked.
