STRIKE 3! Former DOE official Sam Brinton ARRESTED over a third case of luggage theft
05/19/2023 // Ramon Tomey // Views

Sam Brinton, a former senior official at the Department of Energy (DOE), was arrested in Maryland over a third case of luggage theft.

Citing records from Montgomery County, Fox News reported that Brinton was taken into custody at his home in Rockville, Maryland. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police – the lead law enforcement agency for airports serving Washington, D.C. – said Brinton's arrest was related to the theft of airport luggage.

MWAA spokesman James Johnson confirmed the details in an email to Fox News. He wrote: "MWAA Police executed a search warrant [on] May 17 in Montgomery County … in connection with allegations of stolen property in luggage from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport that was brought to the department's attention in February 2023."

"With the assistance of Montgomery County Police (MCP), Samuel Otis Brinton, 35, of Rockville, Maryland, was taken into custody … pending charges of grand larceny."

MCP spokeswoman Shiera Goff also confirmed Brinton's arrest, adding that the department assisted in taking him into custody. She added that the former DOE official is being held in the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit on a no-bond status while awaiting an extradition hearing.

"Brinton was arrested at approximately 10 p.m. [at his] home," Goff added. A witness who claimed to be Brinton's neighbor later told the Daily Wire that he was arrested about an hour after four unmarked police cars arrived.

Brinton first made headlines in July 2022 when President Joe Biden appointed him as deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition at the DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy. The DOE later announced in December of that year that Brinton had left the agency, albeit refusing to comment on the reason why.

"Genderfluid" Brinton involved in two prior thefts

Prior to his May 17 arrest, the former federal official who identifies as "genderfluid" had been involved in two earlier luggage thefts.

Back in July 2022, Brinton stole a suitcase containing an estimated $3,670 in goods at the Harry Reid International Airport in Nevada. It contained jewelry valued at $1,700, clothing worth $850 and makeup valued at $500. Prosecutors in Las Vegas charged Brinton with grand larceny of an item valued between $1,200 and $5,000 in December 2022.

In September 2022, he stole a traveler's luggage that contained goods worth $2,325 from the luggage carousel at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in Minnesota. He was charged over this theft the following month. (Related: 'Gender-fluid' Biden official busted for SECOND time over felony theft of luggage.)

Had Brinton been convicted, he would have faced up to 15 years behind bars. However, he did not spend a day in jail as the presiding judges ruled that a prison stint wasn't necessary. The magistrate who heard the July 2022 theft in Nevada set Brinton's bail at $15,000 and ordered him to "stay out of trouble."

Aside from this, Brinton allegedly stole a luggage owned by Tanzanian fashion designer Asya Khamsin back in March 2018. She alleged that the former DOE official had been wearing clothes that were inside the luggage she lost.

Following the March 2018 theft of her luggage, Khamsin and her husband filed a report with the MWAA Police and Delta Airlines – but the case was never solved. Reports of Brinton's theft together with pictures of him wearing the designer's creations prompted the Khamsins to file a complaint with the Houston Police Department. The department then referred the case to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
