Nima Momeni, 38, a resident of Emeryville in the East Bay, has been charged with murder for allegedly stabbing Lee twice in the chest at approximately 2:30 a.m. on April 4. This violent crime left a trail of blood on the sidewalk in San Francisco's wealthy Rincon Hill neighborhood. (Related: Cash App co-founder STABBED to death in San Francisco, ignored by bystanders.)
SFPD officers took Momeni into custody from his apartment in Emeryville at around 5 a.m. on Thursday, April 13, and records show he was booked into the San Francisco County Jail at 9:19 a.m. He is scheduled to appear before a judge for his first court hearing on Friday, April 14.
SFPD Chief Bill Scott told reporters that the victim and the accused killer knew each other. Momeni's social media states that he is an IT consultant and entrepreneur and the owner of a company called Expand IT, which provides IT consulting services for clients in healthcare, finance, high tech, technology, manufacturing and service.
Court records from Alameda County show that Momeni has prior misdemeanors. In 2004, he was charged for allegedly driving while intoxicated. In 2011, he was charged with allegedly attempting to sell a switchblade knife and driving with a suspended license. He pleaded no contest to the suspended license charge in return for the knife charge being dismissed. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail, three years under probation, a fine of more than $900 and ordered to destroy the knife.
Lee's murder not a random attack
Multiple sources that have spoken with the SFPD described the stabbing, which left the 43-year-old Lee dead in a relatively empty street, as neither a robbery attempt nor a random attack. Rather, the SFPD believes Lee and Momeni knew each other and there was some kind of grievance between them, which the suspect allegedly escalated into a lethal conflict.
While the exact circumstances leading up to the fatal stabbing are still unclear, what is known is that some manner of confrontation commenced between the two while they were in the same vehicle. This same confrontation potentially continued after Lee exited the car, and sometime later, police alleged that Momeni stabbed Lee multiple times with a knife that was recovered not far from where the murder happened.
Lee somehow survived for some time after the stabbing as he was seen on surveillance footage struggling to walk. He was eventually picked up by an ambulance, but later died in the hospital.
Lee's death has been invoked as the latest example of the escalating violent crime situation around the country, especially in cities that have been long governed by the Democrats.
Lee's fellow luminaries in the tech industry and a chorus of other influential voices have further portrayed Lee's killing as part and parcel of a city awash in violent crime and an indicator of the city's descent into further chaos. Before Lee, the city itself already has at least 11 other homicide victims this year.
San Francisco is also home to a lot of public misery, unnerving street behavior and overt drug use. The city's property crime rate has long been exceptionally high, and the police clearance rate for these crimes has long been minimal.
