Colorectal cancer cells viability degraded by extracts from Chinese sweet plum (Sageretia thea)
07/12/2019 // Melissa Smith // Views

A team of researchers at Andong National University and the National Institute of Forest Science in South Korea examined whether extracts from the leaves and branches of the Chinese sweet plum (Sageretia thea) plant have anticancer activity. The research team published their findings in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

  • In Korea and China, Chinese sweet plum is used as a medicine for the treatment of hepatitis and fever.
  • In an earlier study, the leaves and branches of Chinese sweet plum were shown to induce apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. However, research for its anticancer activity is still lacking.
  • Therefore, the Korean research team investigated the potential mechanisms of branches and leaves of the Chinese sweet plum using SW480 colorectal cancer cells, which are widely used to examine the potency of treatment in cancer prevention and treatment.
  • In the study, the research team treated SW480 colorectal cancer cells with either Chinese sweet plum leaf or branch extract for 24 hours.
  • The research team observed that the leaf and branch extracts of the Chinese sweet plum plant induced apoptosis in SW480 colorectal cancer cells and reduced their viability.

In conclusion, the results suggested that Chinese sweet plum leaf and branch extracts have great potential for being developed into an anticancer treatment, particularly for human colorectal cancer.
