Either that, or they are being intentionally misleading.
You may have heard last week that, just days before our July 4 Independence Day celebration, sports brand Nike bent to the hatred of one of its brand ambassadors, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, when the company deciding to pull a sneaker featuring the “Betsy Ross” flag.
That’s the one with 13 stars arranged in a circle on a field of blue flanked by 13 alternating red and white stripes. It’s the original American flag, and while it’s not been proven Ross was the one who actually made it, legend attributes the design and the flag to her.
Nike thought it would be a great idea to feature that flag design on one of its tennis shoes — just in time for our nation’s birthday. Kaepernick objected, however, because he says the flag represents “slavery” and America can never heal from that, apparently — despite fighting a civil war to end it, passing constitutional amendments to prevent it from resurfacing, passing civil rights laws, etc., etc.
And of course, Kaepernick — who single-handedly tanked NFL viewership when he began taking a knee rather than stand for the National Anthem a couple of years ago — isn’t the only American Leftist who is claiming that our original flag is racist.
Michael Eric Dyson, a Georgetown University sociology professor, claimed during an interview on MSNBC last week that the Betsy Ross flag is akin to a Nazi swastika and the KKK burning a cross.
As reported by Campus Reform, Dyson made the comparison after host Hallie Jackson asked him a ‘set-up’ question about why some Americans are upset about the original flag design Nike put on its sneaker.
“Words matter. Symbols matter too. Why don’t we wear a swastika for July 4th?” Dyson said. “‘Cause, I don’t know, it makes a difference. The cross burning on somebody’s lawn? Why don’t we just have a Nike celebration of the [cross]? Well, because those are symbols of hate.” (Related: Independence Day video message from the Health Ranger: America will be lost if those who hate it are not stopped.)
Got that? The original American flag to these people is a ‘symbol of hate’ on par with Hitler’s murderous Nazi regime and the KKK.
Mind you, there has never been anything remotely close to Nazism in the United States. Ever. And the KKK was a Democrat organization, the same party this lunatic likely supports when he goes to vote.
But here he is in an appearance on the most America-hating network this side of CNN spewing this nonsensical garbage as though there is even a modicum of truth to it.
Dyson went on to double down on his America hate, claiming that the original flag of our country is ‘offensive’ and ‘racist’ because “it hails from the Revolutionary period…which was deeply embroiled in, you know, enslavement” — before going on to cite the tired, overused, overplayed example of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as slaveholders.
Dyson then said that “right-wing white supremacists have used it as a rallying cry for their own cause.”
That’s news to us; white supremacists generally rally around Confederate flags (which is to say that by far not all Confederate flag bearers are racists or white supremacists). We’ve yet to see them rallying around Betsy Ross flags. In fact, Betsy Ross flags weren’t even a thing until Nike tried to sell a shoe with the emblem on it and Kaepernick decided it was ‘racist.’
Dyson later regretted making the comparison in an email to Campus Reform, but either way, what he said is disingenuous. The Revolutionary War was about gaining independence from England, not about slavery.
But when you have so much hatred for your own country, you’ll go out of your way to express it, even if your history isn’t close to accurate.
