Want to minimize your trips to the dentist? Here are some tips and tricks!

If you’re like most people, you probably hate going to the dentist. Even if you have found yourself a great holistic dentist, you still probably want to ward off cavities permanently and keep your visits to a minimum.

So, what can you do? Well, first, make sure you aren’t making any of the ever-common brushing mistakes. Most people don’t brush their teeth long enough – averaging about 40 seconds, instead of the usual 2-3 minutes dentists suggest. Pro-tip: Play one of your favorite 2-minute songs while you brush along start to finish.

It’s also common to brush too hard, which can lead to gum recession and enamel erosion. Damaged teeth and gums are more likely to become infected.

Some people, on the other hand, do not brush often enough – figuring once a day is plenty. In reality, you should be brushing your teeth at least two times a day. Some dentists suggest brushing between meals, as well, but it's imperative not to brush immediately after eating. Amylase is a digestive enzyme produced by your salivary glands to begin the digestive process in your mouth when you eat. Brushing immediately after food consumption can lead to this enzyme being ingrained into your teeth (if you brush too hard), leading to an increase in enamel erosion. Flossing between meals is another effective way to remove remnants without the potential for tooth erosion; unfortunately, most people do not floss frequently enough.

Another major issue is using instruments that are too harsh, such as stiff-bristled toothbrushes or harsh toothpastes. Both of these things can be very hard on teeth and gums. Try a softer-bristled toothbrush and a gentler, natural toothpaste, especially if you are already experiencing tooth sensitivity.

Prevention is the most effective way to prevent tooth and gum disease. Always remember to keep your teeth strong and healthy with natural, holistic dentistry and proper tooth cleaning at home.
