Greek citizens dumpster dive for food... do you have a Food Rising Grow Box yet?

Greek citizens

(NaturalNews) As Greece slides ever deeper into its debt crisis with no real hope of a solution on the horizon, many average citizens have been reduced to scavenging in dumpsters just to stay alive.

A recent article in The Telegraph details the plight of formerly employed Greek nationals who now must resort to scouring the streets to find scraps of cardboard, plastic bottles, metal or anything else that can be sold at recycling centers for a few meager euros per day.

Some of these unfortunate people are even forced to eat discarded food found in the trash bins of cities such as Athens, the article reports.

Former construction worker Nikos Polonos tells his story:

Sometimes I'll find scrap metal that I can sell, although if I see something that looks reasonably safe to eat, I'll take it. Other times you might find paper, cans, and bottles that you can get money for if you take them back to the shops for recycling.

Polonos hasn't been able to find work in the three years since the building boom halted after the country plunged into massive debt -- a debt that may now force Greece to exit the European Union.

Skyrocketing unemployment

And Polonos is not alone in his plight. With more than a quarter of the population currently unemployed and nearly 50 percent of those under 25 having no jobs, the financial crisis in this formerly prosperous country has become critical -- and the situation shows no sign of improving anytime soon.

Polonos speaks of his struggle and that of his fellow citizens:

I never believed I would end up like this, but as long as Greece is in this terrible situation, my construction skills are not in demand. A lot of my friends are doing what I do now, and some people I know are even worse off. They have turned to drugs and have no hope at all.

Greece is not the only EU nation dealing with massive debt and unemployment. Several southern European countries including Spain, Portugal and Cyprus are also in danger of being overwhelmed by debt. Ireland also is grappling with an enormous deficit.

The problems that these European nations are facing are not so different from what could happen in the United States. Although the figures have been manipulated to seem otherwise, the U.S. is also in the midst of a debt and employment crisis, and the bottom could drop out any day now.

Of course, it's already a common occurrence to see homeless people scavenging out of dumpsters, but if the crisis that many experts are predicting actually takes place, millions of average Americans may end up facing severe food shortages and find themselves in the same situation as the Greeks.

Ensuring your own family's survival

That's why it is so important to begin taking steps towards self-sufficiency, especially in terms of food production.

Growing your own food is one of the best safeguards against an uncertain future, and there are many methods for doing so, even if your space is limited or if you don't have a yard in which to plant a garden.

One of the ways you can begin growing and harvesting fresh, healthy food is with the Food Rising Mini-Farm Grow Box system, developed by our own Mike Adams, the Health Ranger.

The Food Rising system requires no electricity or expensive equipment, and the plans are available at no cost from the Food Rising website: FoodRising.org.

Let Mike show you how to build your own Grow Box system so that you can start taking the necessary steps to ensuring your family's survival in times of economic collapse or other unforeseeable crises.
