(NaturalNews) If you still think cholesterol is bad for your health, you're not paying attention to the latest peer-reviewed science. Researchers out of Japan have confirmed, along with a multitude of others in recent years, that high cholesterol is not a positive risk factor for heart disease and death as is commonly believed. To the contrary, high cholesterol is linked to a longer lifespan, while low cholesterol points to early disease and death.

Their paper, which was published in the journal Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism -- you can access the full paper for free here[PDF] -- challenges the myth that high cholesterol is a major cause of atherosclerosis. Based on a cohort of epidemiological data out of Japan, this popular hypothesis simply doesn't hold scientific weight, the scientists learned.

Referring to this entrenched anti-cholesterol bias as the "cholesterol theory," the researchers found that the biggest sustaining factor behind the myth is money -- there's too much to lose from telling people the truth that cholesterol is beneficial! The multi-billion-dollar statin drug racket would collapse overnight, and pharmaceutical companies would have to scramble to come up with another scam drug to peddle to the masses.

The world leader with the longest mean life expectancy, Japan, has long been an outlier in research regarding the official cholesterol-is-bad narrative. In general, and across multiple research platforms, the science there has continued to show that Japanese populations with the highest total cholesterol levels tend to have the lowest all-cause mortality. In other words, high cholesterol equals longer life, based on the science.

Intrigued by these findings, the four Japanese scientists involved in this latest study evaluated the data further and came to the same conclusion: High cholesterol isn't a bad thing, and having to little of it actually increases one's risk of developing a chronic illness or dying.

"The relationship between all-cause mortality and serum cholesterol levels in Japan is a very interesting one: mortality actually goes down with higher total or low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, as reported by most Japanese epidemiological studies of the general population," wrote the authors.

"The theory that the lower the cholesterol levels are, the better is completely wrong in the case of Japan--in fact, the exact opposite is true. ... Based on data from Japan, we propose a new direction in the use of cholesterol medications for global health promotion; namely, recognizing that cholesterol is a negative risk factor for all-cause mortality and re-examining our use of cholesterol medications accordingly."

Shattering the cholesterol theory that has dominated Western thinking for decades is no simple task. But studies like this one are helping shine a light on the truth, as are documentaries like The Cholesterol Myth: Dietary Villains, which is recognized as one of the best and most informative documentaries exposing the statin drug scam.

The ABC Australia production has been banned from YouTube and other online video sites, but it's still available for viewing through Vimeo. Parts 1 and 2, both of which are about 30 minutes in length, can be viewed here and here, respectively. "I don't think that I really need to say anything else, other than to repeat this fact," wrote Dr. Malcom Kendrick, author of The Great Cholesterol Con. "If you have a high cholesterol (LDL) level, you will live longer. This is especially true of the elderly."
