(NaturalNews) The general public is still shopping at Walmart and common drugstores for synthetic multivitamins and calcium supplements. The bad news is what you don't know might hurt you.

Walking into a nutritional nightmare is easy if you don't know about supplements. Dangerous supplement's can reverse what you are trying to accomplish. If you pick a cheap poison off the corporate shelves, you're actually making things worse. Stop focusing on RDA percentages, and take a quick read of "other ingredients."

This is where one finds mind-blowing additives which are used to bind everything together, making your liver and kidneys toxic. The hit list includes synthetic sugars, talc, dyes, sodium benzoate, methylcellulose, carnauba wax, silicon or titanium dioxide, and much more.

A recipe for serious health problems, pharmaceutical giants market their supplements like they do fast food - cheap and easy to find. Topping the list are Centrum, Equate, One-A-Day, Flintstones.

For starters, the RDA was established in 1943, and then revised in 1974, shortly after the USDA recommended its "basic four food groups" in a leaflet called "Food for Fitness." Sadly, three of the four food groups were meat, dairy, and grains, which contribute to major diet-related diseases in the United States, a country where heart attacks strike more than 4,000 people a day and a third of the population gets cancer.

Parents, have you read the ingredients in your child's chewable multivitamins? You will see unnatural sweeteners like sucralose and sorbitol. Now some pills contain these because they prolong the shelf life, but what about shortening human life? Send your kids to school with nutrient rich snacks like goji berries and trail mixes.

The goal of a supplement is to promote a long and healthy life. But in a country where national healthcare doesn't exist and pharmaceutical companies make a fortune from illness, we can expect the trend of polluting supplements to continue. Even for Americans who do have medical coverage, the co-pays and deductibles for chronic care management far exceed the cost of quality, organic vitamins.

Body builders and cross trainers should be aware that 75% of the soy and whey protein shake mixes contain synthetic sugars. Zero use of supplements also proves to be a viable option.

Tim VanOrden, a 39 year old vegan body builder and fitness master in California, describes his nutrition program and his non-use of supplements: "My diet consists of uncooked, unprocessed, whole fruits, vegetables and a few nuts and seeds. I take no supplements of any kind and yet I build and carry too much muscle for a runner - figure that one out."

The body knows the difference between real and fake, and it always prefers real. Choose a local health food store where the staff is friendly, knowledgeable and cares about your health goals.
